Case 695 2-speed shifter

Hi, new to this forum, I have a case IH 695 and when i turn the speed switch to the high side it locks the transmission it works fine on the low side wondering if this is a simple fix or if i could do damage just running it on the low side?

The low side probably has warped plates or the clutch is otherwise binding and won't release. When you shift it to high you're trying to engage the high along with the low that won't release. The sooner you tear it down and fix it, likely the less it will cost to fix... Right now it might just be plates and seals. Eventually... someone will engage the high when it's got some inertia behind it and something will grenade to allow one of them to turn. That will be expensive.

Hi, Rod

That sounds like it but is there anyway to test the clutch, and im probably going to remove that switch and leave it in low for the time being

The test is this... if it locks up when you shift it... it's f*****. You can try running it like that but I wouldn't. Repairs get exponentially worse the longer you wait. If the clutch plates are just starting to shed material you can probably repair it without too much cleaning. If you continue running it and it sheds a lot of material into the oil... then you get a major tear down to clean all of the crap out of the housings. You probably damage the hydraulic pump and the various valves in the system, etc.
You might get out of this now for a grand in parts plus a day of labor. If you wait it could be 4 grand in parts and 4 days labor...

i was working on a cx105 McCormick same as a ih cx yes same transmission as the 695 with two speed was doing same thing. on the clutch pedal, there is a switch ele. that disengages the two speed also there is a ele. switch on transmission the is a magnetic type ele switch that when you put it in reverse that disengages the two speed, it well lock up if you have two speed in hi side and in reverse . you need to check thees switches before any thing else

Hi Stuart,
First suggestion is to post your problem on the IH forum as there are more IH experts over there.

So if I understand you correctly when you switch from low to high the tractor stops just like you pushed in the clutch, correct? The engine does not stall?
Ben was partially correct about the switch on the dash and the switch on the clutch pedal. The switch on the clutch should have 4 wires going into it. 2 wires are the start safety switch and 2 wires are to switch the Hi/Lo into Lo to make it easier to change the transmission gears.
On the older models like 584/684 this Hi/Lo feature was called a T/A (Torque Amplifier) and was manually controlled by a lever on the left of the dash like the throttle lever. The Hi/Lo switch replaces the mechanical lever and controls a solenoid in the torque tube that controls the flow of hydraulic oil to the T/A clutch.

Here is archive post:

T/A problems, Lo only:

Hi Wolfy, check TA pressure before, 125 PSI. There is a small plug on the cover, under the front transmission, check for a broken relief valve spring, large plug on the same cover, or stuck relief valve. Drain the oil and remove the cover, check O rings on pipe, remove pump and plate then check gasket under the plate. May be broken seals rings on TA shaft.

PS, I don't believe the 695 has the T/A hydraulic pump anymore. It was replaced by the solenoid switching a hydraulic valve. It is not a good practice to go down steep slopes with a heavy load behind tractor and the Hi/LO switch in Lo. It wrecks the friction disk that prevents the tractor from free wheeling.

Hope this helps
