Hi folks! I really need help!! What do you use to get the friction plate off of the fan shaft on a 45 John Deere Model A? We have no idea how to push the spring in to get the two keys out to replace the friction plate... Stressing!! The tractor is used daily on our ranch and we need it running again asap. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

The best way is with a shop press. Support the shaft assembly by the pulley and press down on the front fan drive disk, it's right behind the keeper, until the spring is compressed enough to slide the keeper back far enough to remove the two locks. There are two friction disks, one in front and one behind the fan.

I just did an unstyled G without pulling the fan shaft off. I took the
radiator off and then used 2 C clamps to compress the spring
enough to get the keepers out. Did the same to put it back
together.

My dad tried that and said it was pulling the shaft from the back end. What are we doing wrong??
