Late model 4020 with a power beyond and front end loader. It blew a hydraulic line on the loader so I put the tranny in tow and pulled it to the shop. The rear tires locked up so I stopped. I proceeded and they started turning again, but then it did it a second time. I replaced the lines and now I have no hydraulics. It appears to be a problem with the transmission pump. I have to oil going to the front pump from the line (at the filter). Anybody else have this problem? Any suggestions?

What transmission?? How far did you tow it?? Was there any oil left in the rear end while you where towing it?

You say you have oil at the supply line. Put a gauge on it and see if you have any pressure there. Should be 130-145 psi.

The tires locking up makes me think you did not have it in tow position and where back driving the transmission. Then pulled it a fairly good distance with the rear end dry. So you have a bearing/issue in the rear end now.

When the line blew I shut it off quick. When I replaced the lines I added about 2 gallons of hydraulic fluid to get it back up to the top mark. It has a synchro transmission and I pulled it about half a mile or so. The shifter was in tow because I got off the first time it locked up and checked it again. Also, I say there is no oil coming out of the line going to the front pump when I break the line loose. It should say no instead of to...dang it...Thanks for the reply, but I drove the tractor a very short distance yesterday to check the transmission and it works fine, forward and reverse.

Another possibility is that the pin through the differential spider gears broke free and whacked the transmission pump.

I am pretty sure there isn't anything that drastically wrong. I have towed 4020s in the past with no problem, just don't know why this one was different.

I hope you"re right, but there"s NO other obvious reason for the tranny pump to fail from towing "cuz if it was REALLY in "tow" the tranny"s topshaft (input shaft)would not have been turning and that"s what drives the pump, so the pump doesn"t turn, either, during proper towing!

I agree with the others. The farthest distance I would tow a JD New Generation RC tractor would be just enough to get it out of the road and then it would go on a trailer or truck. Trans repair is too high to take a chance.

I am very confident that the transmission is ok and I appreciate the thoughts on this. I pulled it very slowly with another tractor and took my time so it wasn't going fast enough to hurt anything. I am going to pull the top cover off maybe tonight if I have the time and see what is going on. As for now I have to start at the beginning to figure out why I have no hydraulics. I will keep this post current. Again, many Thanks. It's a great tractor and I promise to keep it in tip top shape.

Just so you can see how nice this tractor is, this was taken in 2009. I am hurting with it being on the sidelines so I have to get it running soon.

I was baling hay with a 4010 a few years back.
Pushed on the brakes to unload bale, tractor
wheels were locked. Backed up a little everything
seemed to be alright. Next bale it locked up
again. Found out it was the left brake that was
locking. Just tied it up, so I couldn't use it.
Went on baling, finished and drove it home, about
5 miles. Just as I was getting home the power
steering started to act funny. Bottom line the
brakes had come apart and the lining was
everywhere! Pin had also come out a little from
spider gears. knocked off the oiler from the
pinion. The ring gear was wore sharp. The reason
for all this was, somehow water had got into the
hyd/rear end. I quess poor maintenance on my part.

You might be able to just remove the plug for adjusting the three point behind the right scv and with a small flashlight through the hole see if the pipe is broke or shine light down the dipstick hole and see something, just don't drop the light in there. chris
