PTO on '48 Farmall Cub

Recently purchased a running cub with belly mower. Trying to mount the mower and not sure about the pto operation. There is a little lever beside the seat that operates in a slot. Push down to move forward and release. Not engaging the pto. Any help advise appreciated. Have ordered a manual.

That lever move the shaft ahead to enguage he splines that drive the PTO You mite need to remove the rear cover to see why its not sliding the shaft ahead to enguage the spline in the tranny. Lever could be unhooked from the shaft but you wont know till it the back cover is removed.

The lever slides a splined collar forward to lock into the transmission shaft. the pin on the lever may be worn off, or the splines sometimes wear. Another possibility is if the seal retainer at the front of the transmission could be reversed allowing the shaft move forward and disengage. You can see some by removing the filler plug, but you cannot see the pto from the transmission cover. Part of the housing is between the gears and the pto.

Welcome to the forums.
Is there any resistance when you move the lever?
Does it make any kind of grinding if you let the clutch up a
little while trying to engage it?
My PTO shaft was wore out and I had to replace it.
Symptoms of that were NOT as you are describing.
In my case the sliding coupler would engage and the PTO
would spin but it would kick out under any kind of load at all.
So I'm wondering if your coupler is working/moving at all.
Maybe the pin is broken, or it's simply not there at all.
It was a while back, but I think a new PTO shaft, coupler, pin
and gaskets cost me about $150.
Best wishes!

Not to be rude, but how mechanically inclined are you? Have you rocked it back and forth in gear while you engaged it? The PTO on the A that I use to mow doesn't want to shift into gear lots of times. The gears aren't lined up. I have to carefully start to let up on the clutch and then it pops in. It's kind of like a manual transmission that won't go into gear with the engine off.

Some folks wouldn't consider it - that's why I ask.

Your A uses a tube with two "ears" that engages with the main shaft which has a slot for them to lock into the Cub has a splined end that slides into the main shaft and when the splines get worn at the end of the sliding shaft makes them hard to engage. Just like yours sometimes the "EARS" get rounded off and need to be sharpened so they will stay locked when in gear.

Our cub is a 1977. The PTO engages when that lever is moved all the way to the rear. This slides the internal sleeve forward. Sounds like something is worn/missing/broke on the inside. I would remove the transmission cover plate (8 bolts), look inside, and go from there.
