Chrysler flathead 6 cyl parts

I got my great grandpas irrigation pump running but it has a stuck exhaust valve on #4. Ive tried everything and it wont come loose so I guess I need to pull the head off. Does anyone know where to get a head gasket and what the torque specs are?

The engine block is 23" long so I guess that makes it a 230 ci.

The tag says model 30 type 2158-1 ser # 224899

The block casting is 7484929-22 The first number could be a 1, hard to tell but I thinks its a 7.

Any help would be appreciated.

You said: The engine block is 23" long so I guess that makes it a 230 ci. I would throw that statement out of the window. Some of those engines also had the same bore but different strokes so an engine could be the same length but of 2 different displacements. Those engines were from 217 to 265 cubic inch displacement if I remember correctly.

Gasket set should be available at any local parts store. That engine was used by the thousands, right up through the late 70s. Forklifts, airport tugs, etc. As well as the 49-59 car/truck production. If your local parts guy can't get it, change parts guys! Or just order online, Google is your friend, or just go to eBay.

There were 3 slant 6 engines. The two smaller ones used the same block, the larger used a taller block. All 3 had the same bore, with a different stroke. So yes, just measuring the block can get you the wrong parts.

Just to clarify the length issue: 217 and 230cuin engines are 23" long. Same bore, different strokes, same head gasket.

All the larger ones use the 25" big block with various strokes to get up to 265cuin. 251 was common in combines.

Can't you run that piston to the top, fill the combustion chamber with ATF/acetone mix? Then pull the valve cover and gently pry the valve shut.

Ive been putting acetone atf in there and it hasnt helped. The valves are in the block so I can get on it to pull it down.

I had 3 intake valve stuck open on mine due to old gas and managed to get the valves free with allen wrench shape tool and Marvel Mystery oil.

For head gasket, take the remains of your old gasket to the parts store and compare it to the gasket for a 1954 Plymouth. If the store has it in stock. Other years and brands of Chrysler products used the same engine but the 1954 Plymouth had just one engine offered- the 230 cubic inch flathead 6. No chance for confusion of the store clerk on which engine is involved. If that gasket is not a match, then your engine is one of the larger ones from a Chrysler or Desoto.

Maybe I am confusing it with another flat head 6 cylinder but I remember a cover on the side of the block where you access the valve springs and lifters.

There is two chrysler restoration parts outfits in MASS, Roberts and BErnbaums. They should have all you need. As others said auto parts stores and engine supply places should be able to help.

That is correct.

I know the slant 6 was not a flathead. Just an example of how using only one measurement on a block can cause problems.

Interesting side-note: the slant-6 was meant to have an open-deck aluminum block with steel sleeves. They couldn't get the aluminum to flow properly in the molds, so they modified some of the molds to cast them in iron until they could figure out the aluminum. Which never happened in the slant 6's 30-35 year production run.
