My mother's '88 chev caprice classic with 165000K has been garage kept.but not used for the past 8 yrs. Motor is a 4.3 and car has been very well maintained. I'm thinking about puting it back on the road. Has it sat too long? What problems might appear if I proceed with this project? Body is in showroom condition.

change fluids, charge battery and fire it up - be careful at first to ensure breaks are working - may find rear brake cylnders start leaking once you start using it. I think I would leave tranny alone. Nice car.

I would look wiring system over good . Stored that long you might find some wiring with insulation chewed off by mice.

Thanks fellas ! I forgot to mention that the optional stainless wire wheel discs are still in their factory packaging in the trunk !!

Exhaust systems and fuel tanks often rust out from trapped moisture. Fire it up and drive it a bit. These leaks don't always show up right away.

Inspect all steel tubing lines underneath the vehicle [b:1a668062a9]very carefully[/b:1a668062a9]: brake lines, fuel lines, etc. I don't know how dry an environment the car was stored in.

It should be well worth replacing a few parts if the car is otherwise in good shape.

Mother nature never went to sleep I can see you getting deep into it. They sale good folks like to jack them up and put big wheels on them I would take the money and run.

If it's a nice dry garage gas it up and go. If it's on a damp floor or gravel it will probably leak like a screen door in a submarine when you step on the brakes.
