My Dad said this is a potato planter is this correct. Any other information would be helpful who made this, what era is this from and what color should it be. Was asked to paint this red for yard art. Should this be painted or is there value in it left alone.

Not a planter. As stated,a 'digger'/harvester.the bouncing grate seperates the dirt from the taters so you can easily pick them up.

Yes, it is a potato digger. They save a lot of work compared to digging potatoes and breaking up the dirt clods with a garden fork. Don't loan it out for less than $20 per half day. Nice find.

Deere Shaker Potato Digger.

I am 70 yesterday but remember well my grandfather having one just like that. Several things had to be right. The soil had to be dry or not muddy then that little adjustment deal up front was important. Then you had to have the right mule or horse. He could go down thru the field laying the potatoes out.

I had asked why the cover/chute was over the grate behind the main shank. After I posted the question I looked at the pics some more and figured it out.

I edited my post and in the meantime Gary answered my question.

Gary, Thanks for answering my original question. :)

I have looked this up on internet can only find ones with 2 wheels in the front. Mine only has 1 wheel in the front. Do you know what the difference is, or is it not all there
