I have a 1972 Huffy riding mower. The foot pedal for the clutch must be pushed down at all times while mowing. Problem is the abrasive pad that used to be there for grip has totaly deteriated and now it is bright shiny metal. Well my leg gets tired and my foot wants to slip - what can I put on it to get that grip again?

Lowes sells a sandpaper type grip that has adhesive on the back side. It is used on steps to provide a better footing. It sticks right to the steps and stays good. I think it would work for your purpose.

The spray on bed liner works to provide a rough surface. I have also just painted slick metal and while the paint was wet sprinkled some fine sand in the paint. It is cheap and will last for a good while and you can redo it.

The stairs/steps tape would be the simplest if you can find it easy.

Cloth tape like gaffer's tape would work for a while too, and would be cheap.
Maybe you could find a rubber pedal cover off another mower.
Depending on size, an old bicycle handle bar grip?
Take up slack space with the cloth tape if needed to hold it on.

Skate board grip tape. Got any pictures of the Huffy, my grandpa had 2 Sheratons and a rear engine similar to a Snapped.

Here is an option. Go buy a new mower. It is 41 years old.

I don't understand why you'd need to keep pressure on anything to keep it mowing? Sounds like something else is wrong with it? Never heard of such a thing. If it is indeed by design that this is required then maybe you could rig it up with a toggle clamp or something to hold it down?

It is the way they are made. It is a "dead man"
clutch. Much safer in my opinion, you fall off, it
stops. Spent many hours mowing holding the pedal
down on a Huffy.
