One of the neighbor farmers bought a lift at an auction. He has had it for a few years. He brought it over by our place so the neighbor down the road could use it to trim a tree in his back yard,He said while its in the neighborhood,if you want to use it help yourself.I took him up on his offer and trimmed all the branches that were hanging in the driveway, also trimmed a lot of limbs hanging towards the house, and took down one tree that was leaning toward the house.I am glad I did ,because it was rotten in the middle and full of ants,I didnt even know that until I cut it. I didnt get a lot of pictures,I wanted to make use of the machine as much as I could.I did help this fellow with the concrete in his shed last year,so he remembered it and returned a nice favor to me,I like when that happens, and it happens a lot in our neighborhood in PA,just another reason why I like it so much there!
Could someone link this to t tales for me,I still dont know how to do that, and dont have enough time to post it there too,THANKS,see you all later...

Wow! You really got it on a steep cliff in pic #6 there Larry.....! Do you have it tied off to that tree behind it or does it have really good brakes...HaHaHa...That's really a good way to trim trees. Thanks for the pics!

larry@stines,

Pretty handy machine.

Interesting... we had a Sunburst Locust tree like that. Storm took it down onto our garage, LP gas tank and swing set. Center of it was full of black carpenter ants.

I wonder if the ants move in and cause the tree to begin dying... OR if the tree is already dying and that is the reason the ants take up residence in it.

I guess one has to look closely at the base of a tree, seems like those ant nests are easily missed, even at the bottom. Its always hard to say when the conditions will be ideal for the remaining wood to fail under load, wind, ice snow or what have you and when it will fall, nice you got one up on it and took it down before the inevitable, gravity ! LOL ! I took a 120' oak down that was 36" at the butt, about 86 years old, black carpenter ants were way up top in it, but the wood looked about like yours, the live area intact. They wanted it down, guy was filling in a ravine, to connect another part of a field, they tried with a 550 JD dozer, foolishly, I went in and cut it, fell right where I wanted it, top did not shear or break, but just knowing those ants were in there..... I have a habit of looking up while cutting, usually around halfway, just in case, any sign of trouble I am out, I hate cutting and trusting its going your way, have to see it, that lift had to be much safer one chunk at a time !

I know what you mean Larry..
I lived in Oldbridge NJ.and maybe got to meet three good neighbors in two years ...out here we know at least the first 10 mile of who lives there ,, and they are all good neighbors.
I love country living .

Nice pics as usual Larry. Those Genie Booms are a great machine. That's a good safe way to trim trees. Keep up the good work and pics.

I used a 80ft high reach last year to take down a large oak in my back yard last year it sure beats climbing one or dropping the hole tree which in my case was not an option. I hate to sound like the safety police but get your neighbor to buy a full body safety harness to use when in this machine. We have over a dozen high reaches in the plant I work at and a harness is required any time you enter the basket. You need the harness and the 6 ft lanyard to go with it. I know this might sound like I need to mind my on business but I was thrown out of a high reach years ago when a idiot maintenance mechanic I was working with took the last bolt out of a 12in knife gate valve and dropped in the basket with us instead of waiting on the crane to setup. Machine stood up on the front axle and went sliding around the tank. When it finally stopped I was hanging outside the basket by my harness about 20ft off the ground. If you can't find a harness I'll send you one of mine. Gary M
