6 V Autolite Generator output ????

I have a Massey Harris 101 Junior with an Autolite 6 V 3rd brush generator. Just lately, it seems to be charging at a much higher amperage rate than before. With the 3 position light switch in position #1 (low charge), the charge rate approaches 20 amps when in operating RPM range. It drops off to about 3-4 amps at slow idle in this #1 position. When in the #2 (high charge) position, it pins the needle past the top 20-amp mark on the ammeter. When in #3 (high charge with the lights on)it drops back down a bit but still approaches 20 amps of charge. Seems to me this is a bit high. The 3rd brush is adjusted into the lowest amperage output position in its rotation.

Here is my question ..... does this seem to be somewhat high for amp output? And can my battery be damaged by this rate of charge?

I would check it to see if you really are getting that high of a charge out of it. Your ammeter maybe bad. You can use a known good ammeter or a good charging system tester.

That much constant output may damage both generator and battery. Check to make sure the 3rd brush lead is not shorting to the "Hot" armature brush lead. It sounds like you may be getting full generator voltage to the field coils.

Another idea is a shorted field winding. If internally shorted it acts like a much lower voltage device. This means it will draw much more amps through the field and make way more output. Jim

Check to be sure the third brush hasn't moved closer to the adjacent brush. Moving it further away should reduce the charge rate.

A poor ground can make a 3 brush run wild. You better take some voltage readings and hydrometer readings.Steady overcharge can boil a battery dry.12 alternators can blow the caps off a battery and bulge the case. Most drivers cant read an ammeter or voltmeter.
