My brother in law is up from Kentucky, city boy with some hunting land. He just bought a 240 to do some bush hogging. The way he describes it,I take it that one must be a 2 stage clutch? He says he really has to stomp down on the pedal with his heal to engage the lever and that the bush hog wants to "push" it down hill. Says there's no over riding clutch on it. He doesn't have a manual of course. Anybody know how to adjust the clutch on that so it disengages the PTO clutch better?

Correct me if I'm wrong, here, but it's just a simple, single-stage clutch, WITHOUT a live PTO provision.

Install an ORC (Over-running clutch on the PTO to keep the mower from "pushing" the tractor.

I don't know the first thing about it. Never saw it,never had one. Just figured one that new should have live power. All I know is he said he had to stomp the pedal down hard to engage the lever. Apparently the previous owner didn't know anything about it either because he told him you had to shut the engine off the engage the PTO. I guess he should have bought an 8N Ford.

A 240 is just a Farmall C with more powerful engine, improved hydraulics, and different sheet metal.

The PTO is not live.

If you do not have an overrruning clutch on the mower, it will push you until it spins down.

Did you BIL say how the tractor is to get the transmission in gear? I wonder if he has the same problem doing that??

He probably should have bought an 8N. Or maybe a Jubilee.
Would have been cheaper and parts would be available anywhere relatively cheap.
At least this way he should have power steering and ~10 extra HP. ;)

Is it an IH 240 or a Farmall 240? IH 240 is the utility model both made in the late 50's to early 60's, 123 engine, 4 speed trans, optional power steering, neither one had live pto.
