Neighborhood meeting

I am in the process of spliting the remaining land Mom willed to my brother and myself. It is almost 4.0 acres. Dad sold the rest of it off when he was still living. It is a shame what I need to do just to seperate the land. One of the things that needs to be done is a neighborhood meeting to show the neighbors what I am doing with our land. As far as I am concearned it is none of their business what I do as long as it is legal, and permitted by the city. Nothing will change around the buildings where I keep my tractors. I will end up with two 1/2 acre lots, and a 1 acre piece. My brother will end up with about the same. I need to sell one of the two lots just to pay 350,000 or more for all the bs I need to do for the city. The sad part is when Dad was living he could have gone to the county, before the city, and got everything split into 1/2 acre lots for little or nothing. My rant for the day. Stan

You deserve a good rant. More government intrusion into how a rightfull owner should choose to utilize thier own property. Easy to see how people really can hate the government!

We all have to get our ducks in a row before we die. Grandpa got the land for a $1, Dad got it for a $1. I got it free. But had to sell it. All Capital gain. :( Dad was smart enough that he gave me all the farming Equipment before he died. I Should have bought the farm for $$$$ at least on paper. Living trust is the way to go.

Like it not it is done for a purpose. Would you want somebody opening say a dog kennel beside you or starting a vehicle salvage yard? They both may be permitted by the city but the people would still have a say. When I subdivided some land, I had to sent notice to all the homeowners within a certain distance notifying them when the zoning meeting was so they could attend if they had a problem with it. Most recently an auto insurance company wanted to open a sales yard next to a commercial lot I own. I had no problem with it but there was a very vocal group of businesses that didn't want them in the area. The county finally voted to not let them open.

The zoning is only residential 1/2 acre lots. Single family homes. No other business can be started, in this area. Now if it were business zoning I could see the notices being sent to neighbors. Stan

There was someone wanted to open a shop just north of McCook here recently- the city sent him a letter telling him how many electrical services he was going to put in when he had electric run to his site. Guess out here the city has say in any building within 2 miles of city limits. Guess he told them he'd let it grow up in brush and buy land they couldn't set their grubby little fingers on and be money ahead of putting in all their electrical services.

The purpose it's done for is to keep property values up so they can tax you more. IMO it's no ones business what I do with my land UNTIL I cause a clear problem for someone else. Asthetics are not a problem, farming is not a problem, working on equipment is not a problem- especially if I was here first!

One of our local Town Councilmen is trying to push a zoning type regulation here where we've never needed zoning laws. He and his buddy on the Planning Board are in cahoots. Got me riled enough that I'm considering running for Town Board just to help block them.
