317 John Deere with onan engine having problems with

I am having problems with my john deere tractor with an onan engine. When you turn on the key the wires get hot and it won't start running. I am thinking I need to buy a regulator for it. I am not sure what is going on with it. I have called so many tractors stores and they have no clue what to do. Any advice would be great.

When I start it the regulator gets hot and smokes than the wires to the PTO get hot. I just don't know what to do next, any advice would help

Start isolating circuits. If the PTO switch is getting hot, that is the first place I would look for a short. Disconnet the switch and run a wire from the battery to the solonoid for the pto and see if the pto engages without getting hot.

Yep, but DEERE spent a LOT of money changing many them over to Onans due to the inherent unreliability of the Kohler KT-17's, so a 317 CAN officially have an Onan!

In my brief search of the 317 parts catalog I didn't see Kohler mentioned only Onan.

If regulator is getting hot unplug it then start engine and see if that will solve your 317's wire heating problem.
