Holy crap! I had the daylights scared right out of me! I"m on the wifes laptop right now. My computer screen went white, then I got a screen that said my computer files had been seized by the FBI. Said it had been used for illegal activity, including things that mean hefty fines and serious jail time! The thing had the seals from Treasury and the FBI,the whole bit. When I stopped shaking and got my vision back,I called the internet service provider. The guy just calmly told me I had the FBI virus,if I"d bring it in they could clean it out,but it"ll take at least a day or two.

I"m telling you what,I"d better not ever get my hands on the lowlifes who write those things. Like I told them at the place where I dropped it off,the kind of things they were accusing me of are the kind of things that get you a divorce!

rrlund- Had a neighbor drive up honking his horn. I went out to see what was going on. He got out of his truck and was white as a ghost and visibly shaken. He said he was looking at some porn sites using his wifes laptop and the FBI warning popped up.

He was scared to death. I think he was more scared of his wife finding out than the FBI warning.;) Anyway, he wanted my son to fix it. It took about an hour for my son to clean up the virus. The whole time, during the cleanup, this guy was saying "I'm dead if my wife finds out!".

Ahh, you were wondering for a minute who got into the kiddy crap... I got one like that a couple weeks ago except this one had the RCMP name on it.
Short answer... reboot your computer and keep hitting F8 until it brings up the boot menu. Boot it in safe mode with command prompt. When you get a prompt, type 'msconfig' and hit return... Find the odd looking entry in the start config menu and disable it. Then exit and reboot. That should disable it from freezing the machine... Then run a good virus scan to wipe it clean.
That should do it... at least if it's the same basic virus as I got.
Other option is to google the virus and you should find a solution. If you also have a second user account on the machine you can switch users and use that account...

Ya that crossed my mind eventually. No warrant. That and they said it was the FBI out of a rinkydink little town of about 500 people. There was a bunch of crap at the bottom offering to sell a fix, available at WalMart,CVS,Radio Shack etc.

Sure puts the fear of God in you for a few minutes. Those seals looked real to me!

New version locks you all the way out. Booting in safe mode will only trigger a canned cycle in which the computer just goes into a loop. The new one will also infect the second user also, so if you boot into a non infected user and start running a malware program at will attack that user as well. Only way to fix is pull the hard drive and hook it to another computer, and then scan that drive for the bug.

The only thing I'd been on was here,Yahoo mail, the bank, the local paper,United Producers Livestock and an auction site. The wife suspected Yahoo mail as the source.

Thing is,it didn't happen when I was online. I'd been to those sites then got off, went outdoors and did some things. Came back an hour or so later, hit the spacebar to wake up the computer and my desktop wouldn't even work, just the white screen. Scary stuff!

don't look at porn on the internet, those sites load cookies into your computer to try to reconnect to it - get your porn the old fashioned way at the truck stop :)

Something just dawned on me. You said MSN sites. Isn't Bing MSN? I did a Bing search the other day for a plastic welder so I can weld up a crack in the sprayer tank.Wonder if it came from there and took a day or two to shut me down.

Maybe I'd better stick to Google,

Ive had that one twice. Had to buy avg piece of mind to get rid of it. Pretty spendy for an old worn out computer. They told me it was all over the place not just porn sites. I got the last one when I was on ebay. When you get rid of it buy a good virus program. Havent had it since.

A few years ago I got virus that kept disconnecting us from the internet it turned oft it piggybacked on on of microsoft updates ain't that a kick

Ahh, nasty one then. This one took 5 min to get rid of. I also suspect it came in on an Acrobat update. I know it came on some type of update..

We caught that here about 3 months ago. Wife and I were looking at a website for vacations when the freebe microsoft anti virus popped on, made mention of a virus and before I could close the window we had white screen and locked up. Really had to laugh looking at the details of the one we had, in that it mentioned that for a sum of money all the illegal activity would be removed and we would be off the hook. Local phone company remoevd it and installed 3 year AVG 2013 for 100.00$+/-

Ya,down at the bottom of the page on this one it wanted to get me to get a code number, then pay to unlock it.

I realize that a lot of business computers need to have Windoze as an operating system, but I'm posting this from a computer with Ubuntu 12.10. The operating system is free, the updates are free, it has more features than a guy could want, and (knock on wood), it doesn't get viruses. Plus, this computer is about 10 years old and, with only the addition of an aftermarket stick to max out the memory, is as fast as something brand new.
I don't like to give royalty money to anybody who continues to make defective products.

I did an Adobe upgrade a few months ago and drug something in with it. I had to take the computer to the kids at Staples to get rid of it.

My laptop (my main computer) got that virus, locked it right up tight couldn't even start up in safe mode. So I remoted in from another computer to save all my valuable files. Both of them-HA. And went on with a complete reformat/reinstall of the OS. I do a backup every six months so it wasn't so bad, just time consuming.

These hackers will try anything to get you to pay them.
Almost as bad as the copper/scrap thieves.
At least that virus isn't too hard to get rid of.

Any site that hosts ads is also a prime source. As soon as somebody posts a fix for it on the internet, it evolves.

I got it 3 times off of CNBC website, which is part of the MSN family. Don't go there anymore.

Your desktop and computor are functioning behind the mask. If you could see behind it, you could start you antivirus software and get rid of it

Hello Rlpintx,

I had the same happen to me with Acrobat update.
It actually changed my home page, and right into some porn site.
There is an option on my Windows security. there is a box you check that does not allow the home page to be replaced.

Guido.

I use the GSA sales auction site and here lately the pop ups are driving me nuts. How do you fix that Roy

Had it been the real FBI that siezed files from your computer, the seal that they would have left would have contained a hologram that when looked at from certain angles, would have shown an image of J. Edgar wearing one of his then favorite silky evening gowns. Of course, I only started that rumor, not confirmed it.

I understand a lot of this can be avoided by not using Internet Explorer as your search engine. Years back I went to Firefox, dumped Norton and the other big Anti-V programs and went to AVG. I have few problems related to hackers, etc. And I'm running an older, 6-8 year old, $40.00 used computer.

Just like I do with "iboats" for exactly the same reason. Take my helping others elsewhere along with the potential for business with them that my comments may trigger in a needy person. Besides who in their right mind would even open, much less make a purchase, from a popup that hits you in the face every 15 seconds or so and blocks out part of what you are trying to do to help others.
