Dodge/Cummins Alternator Fix

I"m putting together an irrigation pump using an
engine out of a 1993 Dodge Ram 250 truck, with
Cummins diesel engine. I"ve got everything put
together now and mostly wired, except for the
alternator, which is externally regulated by the
Body Control Module. I"m searching for an
alternator that would be almost a direct
replacement and easy to get so I don"t have to
ding around to make something work if it should
ever fail. The rebuilders want to sell me a new
but modified alternator for about $400, but then
I"m back to having to ding with it to make it all
work, not to mention expensive.

THE 91 AND EARLIER ALTERNATORS HAD A STAND ALONE VOLTAGE REGULATOR WITH 3 WIRES THAT IS INEXPENSIVE AND EASY TO WIRE. iT WOULD PROBABLY BE your easiest alternative.

Would that regulator run my current alternator if I changed my connectors? Mine is new enough to be controlled by the truck"s computer.

I bet it would. probably could just string new wires to the alternator. The regulator comes with a good wiring diagram as well.

Yes they do make a chip for the back of the alternator. The rebuilders should sell you one. if you tell me what alternator it is i"ll get you the part # for it. It will either be a denso or a bosch probably. You can also wire in the older Chrysler regulator for less money and it is probably more reliable. hth jstpa

Use your original alternator with the earlier Mopar regulator, piece of cake to connect. This is the fix in later model trucks when the reg. in the PCM goes bad.

The 2 wires shown going to the alt. connect to the field terminals, the small terminals, it makes no difference which wire goes to which terminal.

Yes it will. PCM went bad on my 93 pickup. Bought a $10 ford regulator at Carquest, screwed it to the firewall and wired it up. That was 8 years ago.

Is it a Denso alternator. I went to John Deere and got a set of brush's for my dodge caravan. From what I can remember I could have easily converted the alternator to the Denso internal regulator if I had wanted to. The Caravan of course is like yours with the computer controlling the charging.

I have two that run with a reostat (spelling?) that you manually set but I really like the idea and photo of the Dodge regulator wired to do the job. My reostat was already on the Murphy Switch panel so it was handy.

I agree, a Delco single wire would be slick, but the problem is in the mounting of the alternator just as much as the wiring.
