Cranks but does not start

I have a 1950's Massey Ferguson with a z134 continental motor. Over the years I've had zero problems starting it. This year I crank it with a good strong battery but nothing. Disconnecting the coil wire (from distributor to coil) I get no spark from the coil to the wire. Replaced the coil, still nothing. Any help would be appreciated. [/img]

Could be any ignition problem, from a bad switch to condenser, broken wire etc. But if it ran good when you put it away, I'm betting on dirty points. Turn the engine over until the points are closed, pass a dollar bill between them a dozen times to clean off a little oxidation, then try again. You should be pulling the coil lead out of the distributor cap, not the other way around, lots easier to see a spark. If that doesn't work come back and we'll give some more specific tests to do.

I would bet you have a problem with the points. Points only last so long and if they are dirty or corrode they will not work and all the coils in the world will not fix bad or dirty points. One way to be sure is hot wire it. If the points are closed and you hot wire it and you have a spark when you hook it up the points are good if no spark points are bad

Use a volt meter or test lite and with the points open and the ignition switch in the "on position" see if there voltage to your coil on both small terminals. If there's no voltage present at the coil you need to check your ignition switch for voltage. Should have voltage feeding the switch.
If there's no voltage at the switch check for a loose connection or broken wire that feeds voltage to your switch. Hal

I second the checking of the points. Probably oxidized a bit if the machine has been sitting a little while. I would have this problem with my old jeep after sitting for the winter.

Try cleaning them up a bit and see if you get spark.
