Ford Power Stroke vs dodge Cummins(Tractor haulers)

My 12 valve cummins was down so I hooked a buddies PS to the gooseneck with an M on it. The Power Stroke is a 99 Ford with a 6 speed.
The power is unbelievable by comparison. Both are factory setups, but that Ford is amazingly powerful compared to the Cummins. I don't know if this is true with all of them, but I am now a believer.

Well it was probebly a 7.3 so it was a lot bigger motor, and
probebly quiet a bit newer, but if you had a newer 5.9 or the
6.7 high output, it would be a different story. And if its not a 7.3
it will be it the shop regularly.

We have all 7.3 diesels. I just sold a 99 f250 with
6 speed and bought an 03 7.3 with an auto in it
granted its a crew cab and a lot bigger it pulls
good but not like the 6 speed it just seems to
shift weird for me. My dad has an 02 350 with 7.3
and 6 speed and it pulls very nice even with the big
stuff on it... I always liked the cummins motor
just not dodge trucks.

Used to own a dodge, but got tired of the repair bills. I have owned all three and seems like the ford & chevy gave me fewer hassles & repair bills. (I"ve actually owned 2 dodges, so it wasn"t like it was one and done.)

I'm quite sure there is an hp upgrade from the factory
between those trucks. 20 or 30 horse doesnt seem like
much, but it is. I put a power puck in my 2001costs dodge
diesel, and man what a difference! That thing will pull like a
beast and gets better mileage empty. Manual transmissions
make a difference in the older trucks also. I'm not sure which
years, but some of the 12 valve dodges with manual
transmissions were rated at higher hp and torque from the
factory. Fords may have been the same way, but I'm not sure.

Poking a hornets nest here but oh well. I've had both of the
trucks you mention (or very similar) and the Ford never wanted
for power and was great on fuel (2wd) but when it needed a
second set of HEUI injectors it went down the road. If I recall
correctly your truck is an '95 auto? If so that will explain a lot of
your difference, in the Dodge they derated the 5.9 in front of the
auto's about 20-30hp less than the manuals, also they upped
the horsepower in front of both transmission a couple of times
from 94-98. I went from a '98 12v to a 2012 with the 6.7 and
what a difference almost 2x the horsepower makes. You could
get more power out of your 5.9 fairly easily but your
transmission won't like it. It all depends on how you want to
spend your money. Sam

Stock for srock the stroke might be a little better. I've got a 97 12 and an 07 6.7. I'll never own another ford unless I buy one to put a cummins in. My father had a 99 7.3. The truck is great for the most part. Had 225k on it when he sold it. He switched to dodge after that ford also. Is your dodge an auto or a manual?

I have always had Fords after IHC stopped building pickups. 6.9, 460, and now a 7.3 6 speed.
Love this 02 250 7.3 6 speed. But with that said it has 78K, and turns over great, seems to be getting fuel, but won't fire. Tow service should be here in two hours. Will keep you posted.

Tks, that is what I have heard, and thought. I had it in a year ago, and told them to replace it then, but you know how that goes. What kind of a job is that?

Don't know. Never changed one, just know of numerous people who have. I don't think it's too big of a deal, they didn't complain about it. I'm sure a ford guy on here will chime in.

10mm socket and a long extension...1 bolt...pull unplug...plug in...reinstall bolt....youre gone...keep a extra sensor in glove box at all times and tools to change it.

There's a lot of tuning you can do on that 12 valve for no costs.
When was the last time you adjusted the tappets on it? A bigger set
of injectors can make a lot of difference also.

The 95 cummins I sold to my nephew pulled 258 hp on the dyno last saturday. Stock is 160 hp. My 97 pulled 272 hp. Stock is 180 hp. Both took about an hour to turn up. Neither truck is turned up all the way. We have to do some trany up grades first. My 06 6.0 f350 that has been parked for over a year will be getting a 12v cummins swapped into it when I get the chance.

You are not comparing apples to apples. I had a 12V.-5sp that had 3.something differentals. Ran like a scalded dog and got 24 MPG, but wouldn't pull a greasy string. I also have a 24 Valve 5 speed with 4:10 gears. Gets 12-14 MPG but will pull the hindges off of hells gate.Have seen very few stock 7.3's that will stay with it in the mountains pulling 18,000#. Hard to compare trucks if you don't know the specs.

I have had Fords,Chevys, and Dodge diesels and there is very little difference and they are all getting worse the more emission control is added. The 7.3 P.S and older Dodge mechanical 12V were very dependable but the new ones have much improved tranmissions.

I have a cummins in my 97 and in 30 minute it got an
extra 100 HP just by sliding the fuel plate ahead on
the injection pump . The fuel milage did not get any
worse under load and got better without a load I
have the 3.42 gear ratio and with 12 head of fat
cattle in a steel trailer I do not have to shift for
hills after i get 5th gear it will pull as long as
RPM is over 1500

Yes I agree, if I buy a diesel, it will be a dodge and probebly no newer than a 2012 then there is no def fluid. But I would consider a newer one, espicially if they'd put in a iveco, I think those are good motors also. I love the cummins also, but an iveco would be alright also.

If I had the money to buy by specs, I would not be running a 94 Dodge and a 99 Ford. Spec has nothing to do with it, I simply have 2 different trucks. One runs good and the other one doesn't.

Sloppy shifting on the early 200x ford E4OD/4R100 autos can be fixed with a spring kit and sonax valve. Easy update and makes a serious difference in positive shifting. Google it - "Sonax Valve and Tricumulator Springs"
