alice-chalmers battery draining

Had my tractor overhauled. Now something is draining the battery. The guy that did the overhaul said it was the battery. Even though it had been a new battery when he did the overhaul. Bought new battery and it is still doing it. Something is draining the battery. Charge the battery and it runs until the battery goes dead. Or if you start it and shut it off and leave it sit, the battery will be dead when you go to start it again.Any ideas?

Mike, welcome to the forum!
It would really help to know what model tractor you're working on.
12 volt or 6 volt? Alternator or generator?
Since it goes dead when running, I assume it's a gas engine with
a distributor type ignition system vice a magneto.
If it's an older 6 volt system it could be the voltage regulator/cutout sticking.

I think an alternator will draw power even if the tractor is shut off. Some will require a switch for the alternater so it will not drain the battery. This usually takes a few weeks to happen, so if it drains faster then it may be something else.

If your alternator is a Delco SI type, and the alternators regulator has seperate plug on wire connectors at the #1 & #2 regulator terminals, The mechanic doing the overhaul may have switched those wires. Switching the #1 and #2 regulator wires(as marked on the rear edge of the alternator) will keep the alternator field circuit powered all the time and will discharge the battery in about 8-12 hours. If one of the small regulator wires connects to the big BAT stud on the alternator rear, that one must go on the #2 regulator terminal blade. The #1 wire must have power only when the ignition switch is on.

Mike I agree with Royse.

We need to know this information before we can make an intelligent answer to you.

Once we know what kind of tractor and electrical system you have will make our troubleshooting much easier for us.

When I come across a vehicle draining the battery I disconnect the battery and use a battery charger in place of the battery. Then I turn the charger on and see how many amps is being drawn. If there is a fuse box you can pull one fuse out at a time and see if the charger goes to zero. This helps to determine what is staying on and draining the battery.
