cracked exhaust manifold

I have a 2 inch long crack in my exhaust manifold on my gas JD 2010. The tractor runs fine. Is there any potential for damage from this crack to the engine?? Or is reducing performance that I just don't notice?

Do you know how to braze or know someone that is good at brazing? If brazed right it will hold for a long time.

Just curious... Can a hole in the muffler do the same thing?
 
not going to hurt a thing if its a hairline crack. also you dont braze manifolds you weld them. what do you think will happen when the manifold gets cherry red from working, the brass will melt.
 
I have seen manifolds that have been brazed and lasted for years with no problems. Had an Ih truck with cracked manifold that was brazed and I had the truck 6 years and it was still good when I sold it.
 
probably not. they say when you shut off the hot engine, you don't want cool air coming in on the valves. see guys capping headers off. another good reason for rain caps. don't know if a crack would qualify, maybe. welding is better but brazing probably fine.

Just drill a SMALL hole at the ends of the crack to keep it from spreading, and then weld it up with a Nickel rod.

I will probably try my hand at an o/a weld with a nickel rod. I've got a broken header to practice on.

If a manifold gets cherry red the ignition timing is late.
