Watch Modern Marvels on the subject of Potato uses. I always wondered why northern Wisconsin growers didn't manufacture Vodka ,with approval from the government stamp?Shows a grower doing just that. 90 proof alcohol ,drinking stuff just like the ruskies. Said 20 lbs makes a quart of the good stuff. hic hic, hic, One of the growers does make vodka. Ethanol too. Son got 7 more rows planted, so maybe if we cant eat em all just as well drink in the surplus.lol. Do you guys make the good stuff with your overflow of spuds? Be HONEST NOW .lol.

Small stills are very easy to build and cheap. Plans are all over the internet.

Guy I use to work with made his out of a pressure cooker and copper tubing. Be careful as you sweep through your temperature range, the first stuff with kill you... methanol.

Methanol starts around 150F (bad stuff), ethanol starts around 175F (good stuff).

If you have the potatoes, all you need is sugar and brewers yeast.

Good luck

I didn't know that potatoes were used to make Vodka until just a few years ago. I guess that is because here in North Carolina we tend to lean more toward grain spirits. We don't estimate your corn yield in bushels per acre, we estimate it in gallons per acre!

There"s a plant in western MN that makes vodka...I think out of potatoes. Re: NC corn yield measurements-----I spent some time in Army SF training in Pisgah mtns, western NC, back in "65. Always interesting to see the curls of smoke in those mtns.....no cabins around! Same with reading the newspaper reports about those who weren"t careful enough, and got caught!

Never tried to brew any,,,lol but have had suprisingly good luck in storing the home grown taters,we are still eating last years crop.they do get sprouts on them but they are still firm,we just rub the sprouts off them wash them and cook them.Last year we made a full cycle, the early potatoes were ready just as we ran out of the last crop,It was more of a challenge than a necessity,we just wanted to see if we could do it.

At college [won"t way where] two Chemical Engineering friends of mine checked out of the Chem lab enough tubing, bunsen burners, flasks etc., etc., and made liter after liter of fine potato vodka. Fine stuff.
