OT: driving a water well

The bottom of the pipe will get wet.
(sorry, I couldn't resist. I actually have no clue)

Two answers. (assumes you are driving a screen point shallow well, not a casing.)
Applying suction every time you drive it one point length (OK but time consuming)
Watch the progression of the pipe every hit. When it moves more each hit you may be in more permiable layers. Also get information from surrounding owners to guess depth or access well logs (some areas require them) to assess the expected depth of water.
It is always a crap shoot. Jim

actually you're correct...we had an idea how deep the water table was so we drove to that depth and started removing driving cap to drop a line and check for moisture inside pipe about every couple feet...how often you check depends on length of screen...i've seen people drive right past their water before.

dropping a line with a small weight works good--just jiggle it as it goes down and you can hear the splash.
Lots of times you can hear water splash as the weight hits the pipe.
