I do air conditioner work and have a lot of copper laying around the shop, I've been noticing a lot of it disapperaring, over a thousand dollars in the past two months. i put a camera outside over a bait pile and sure enough I caught a neighbor down the road yesterday morning at 10:30 red handed. It really ------ me off him carring it off on the camera. I confronted him yesterday and this afternoon again and told him again that it better be returned by first thing in the morning or I was going to turn him in. All he did was deny it. I even fixed his ac over the weekend and didn't charge him anything. I guess it's my duty to report him him, neighbor or not.

If he's stealing from you,he's NOT your friend!Turn him in,press charges just like you would do to any common thief.Which is exactly what he is!

I had a scrap guy that had been coming here for years steal some stuff last month. The town cop happened along and cought him.

I was ------. I'd helped this guy, giving him everything for years. And then he goes and loads stuff without me knowing!

I told the cop to write him a ticket... he did, and turns out, he was wanted in the next county! He left in cuffs!

I had mixed emotions at first, but if you don't do something, how's it gonna change?????

Theft is theft. Turn him in. Only hope he gets an appropriate penalty, and comes back tuo haunt you later. Your camera ought to make it a slam-dunk for the authorities.

Turn him in! I have no use for a thief. If he will steal scrap from you, what else will he steal if he thinks he can get away with it?

A thief and a liar.
Turn him in and don't think twice.
I don't care what their excuse is.
If they were in dire straights, they
could ask and good folks would help them.

The worst thing about it is that you will press charges on him and he will most likely be bonded out in less than 24 hours.

I'd of turned him in as soon as he lied to you, did you show him the video, and see his reaction?

Yep turn him in you have the proof. That sums it up right there. Send him a bill for the work you did too!!

I am the fly in the ointment here, I would not turn him in.........I would run over him with your service truck!

It seems unanimous and I'm not going to break the chain as a tjief and a liar are about the lowest form of life as gar as I'm concerned also. So, turn his butt in and press charges.

That said, having seen the way things play out around here it probably won't do you alot of good if your autorities are like the ones around Concord. The reason I say this is you have no absolute proof that he was the one taking it for the last two months, just the one time you caught him on camera. As a result the only thing they can charge him with stealing is the value of the copper he was caught on camera with, IF the DA even choses to do that. Thing is, regardless of wether you press charges or not the DA will still make the final decision as to wether anything is done in regard to your desires to see the guy prosecuted. Then even if he does chose to do so, unless the guy had far more copper on him than the hundred or so dollars worth he most likely had, about the most he's going to get will typically be a slap on the wrist.

In the end anything you do will in regard to pressing charges will have to be based more on the principle of the matter than actually hoping to see justice done....Unfortunately sad but true....

Call the cops and have them get a search warrant for his place. Hard to say how much of your stuff and others is over there.
File a complaint for the thousands. Let the cops look for it.

Just figure out how much he has stolen over the last few months and start sending him a check every month. He must think you owe him at least that much.

Around here, it would depend on how well-connected the thief is, or isn't. Prosecutors here might charge someone who's not well-connected with theft; if they're somewhat well-connected, the charge might be "exerting unauthorized control" over your property; and if they're quite well-connected, something called "pre-trial diversion" might be used, and the perpetrator may never see the inside of a courtroom, much less a jail cell.

Ball's in the prosecutor's court, and he might just decide to pick it up and go home on your case. Photo evidence can be shown to be subject to manipulation--whether it was or not, Photoshop programs DO exist--so a defense attorney might decide to introduce such "reasonable doubt" into a case, should it ever go to trial.

Count on a LOT of things, but don't count on justice being served.

Not a good neighbor! The copper gets returned, you get compensated or he gets a charge against him filed.

The biggest thing I'm concerned about is him coming back after me, he is kinda like the local thug.

Same as what everyone else is saying, turn him in and help the authorities get a conviction. Metal thefts here in Ohio are at epidemic level, the idiots are even stealing from the electrical substations, I don't feel a bit sorry for the ones that get electrocuted doing it.

Concealed carry available to you? An assault charge will get him more time too.

If you're thinking he's going off to jail for 15 years to life for stealing someone else's "garbage" think again.

The video evidence may not be admissible because he was not aware he was being videoed.

He will use the "it was just junk and he was going to throw it away anyway" defense. If you didn't have it secured, then the cops can turn it around and make it your fault.

Nowadays it may as well be legal for anyone to walk on to your property and take anything that isn't chained down. Jails are overcrowded with real (i.e violent) criminals. Law enforcement budgets are cut to the bone.

You stored the copper scrap outside ? Thats like leaving a pile of cash with a TAKE ME sign on it! I would estimate the poundage and tell him to cough up the cash.
Get a barrel for inside the shop.

All of the so called law enforcement around our area are like every other do nothing branch of government, they continually whine for more money, lobby to pass special taxes and millages and do nothing about dope heads, thieves and murderers. They would never dream of actually confronting anyone who might shoot back or fight. The only people they stop and harass are honest working people, why do you think the police are always out giving tickets at 7am and 5pm? a working person has to pay their fines whereas dopeheads and drunks will go lay up for free room and board for 90 days. These days the law is only enforced on the law abiding.

I'd say you did the right thing already - you gave him a chance to do the right thing.

I think I'd still at least leave it in the local police departments hands, though I don't think it'll do much good.

Problem is - all you've got is proof that he took your bait, and what was that worth? 10 bucks?.

That doesn't prove that he stole anything else from you.

He probably WAS the one taking all the other stuff - but there's no way it'd hold up in court.

So all you're really going to do by pressing the matter is waste YOUR OWN time, further losing out to this jack@#$.

and for what - a thousand bucks - that you're never going to get back?

Worst part about having a great justice system that is based on proof and fact is when you can't prove something, no matter how much you know it's true. Unfortunately, you've got to just let it go.

It's not easy, in fact it's so hard that many people often get themselves in trouble trying to dole out their own justice.
Let it go - and keep the camera in your shop.

I wish I could store it inside, but I have over 50 old units and scrap metal and a lot of stuff. It's probley been going on for awhile and he got greedy and I'm finally noticing. I'm going to check this afternoon when I get back in and take action.

Then you need to go to the scrap metal place more often. Keep it in the truck until it gets in the way then scrap it. I just took 63 lbs of high voltage cable fully insulated . I got 83 dollars. Scrap ain't crap , that little greasy guy is a millionaire!

Call to cops on him !

If they let it go then post your video of him all over facebook and you tube to let others know to watch out for this guy.
