How do you check to see if alternator is workinf? Amp neater on tractor is not working ,I think as it does not show discharge od charge.
I can charge battery and tractor starts but after a few hours of work it will not restart.

Connect a voltmeter directly from one battery post to the other...........it should read about 1/2 to 1 volt higher when engine running at speed (for maybe 5 minutes), than after sitting for hours without running or charging.

Check your voltage when not running, should be a little about 12.6, should go above 13.5 when running.

Do as the other 2 have said. If anybody say to pull a battery cable off and if it dies the alternator is bad DO NOT do it you WILL let the smoke out of the alternator and you could also smoke your self as in be put 6 foot under. Of course there is also option 2 or 3. Pull the alternator off and take it to a good auto parts store they can bench test it and most charge all of $00.00 for doing so

If it is running and you put a hacksaw blade near the end frame bearing (staying clear of electrical terminals)it will be pulled toward the bearing due to high magnetic field. If no magnetic field, the alternator is not working. With a magnetic field it is at least getting a field to make electricity with, but it is not an indication of output. That should be 14.2 volts when running above idle.
We can help more if we know what brand of alt it is, and what year the tractor is. Jim

Thanks all. It is a 35 hp deisel about 2007.
It has been a great tractor and worked very hard
clearing and maintaining about 50 ac.

all good advise,..but if you can't start after a few hours you either have a bad drawdown or your battery is whipped

Get a multimeter and check the voltage AT THE BATTERY. If it's making 14V or better, it's charging.
