John Deere 5020

I am looking at buying a John Deere 5020, The tractor starts and runs great, but I think the clutch may be out or just needs adjustment. You can put the tractor in all the gears just fine and nothing happens, except if you put it in 1st and run it at high rpm it wants to crawl and the then begins to jump a little. How do you go about adjusting the clutch, or does anyone have any insight on what it could be. Any input is appreciated.

If all it needed was adjustment then I would think the seller would do it or have it done so he could ask a more favorable price. Adjust it before you buy it would be my advise.

A woman is selling it due to her husbands passing. She has receipts for $8000 in motor work that her husband had done before passing. The tractor has sat a little over a year, and she knows nothing more about it. Any thing I should check for or try to see if I can get it into a gear.

I know my uncles 5020 w/cab had a clutch problem and it ended up being all the mud/sludge under cab in the linkeage. Cleaned it out and solved the problem. Sounds like you shouldn't have much else to worry about mechanically if the price is right. Seems like someone would have noticed a bad clutch when or before they tore it apart and before they put it back together so maybe it's just something simple bound up or linkeage fell apart . I don't think those ever had power shift so check out shift and clutch linkeage.

Just my thoughts-----If the owner had spent $8000 in parts for the engine just before passing, don't you think his mechanic would have taken care of the clutch also?? May just be the clutch though, just a thought.

If they (5020) are like a 4020, you sure can get the clutch fingers and the pto fingers out of adjustment. JD has a gauge we borrowed to adjust the fingers. It was the wrong one! Took it apart at least 4 times adjusting on the fingers to get them to work. Didn't know the gauge was wrong. Vic
