Horse slaughter may begin

Hasn't happened yet but looks like unless congress acts to block it,a N.M. plant won a lawsuit which allows them to begin slaughtering horses. Probably be welcome news to some starving horses around here.

thats great, there are horses everywhere where i live and nobody can get rid of them. It costs more to haul them to the sale barn than you get for them. If they don't have a purpose like bucking horse or roping horse they are worth nothing all they do is eat grass.

I think you probably stuck a stick in a hornets' nest with this topic.
Most people who raise horses would never think of eating them.
Yet most people who raise cattle would eat beef.
Guess I'll just sit and watch the responses. Should be interesting.

I agree.
I eat or have eaten many animals. I even ate horse in France once. Oh well, it tasted like lamb. Wasn't too bad. It would be good in a Gyro.

As Royse indicated, that is an interesting situation. People raise and eat just about any other kind of animal, but balk at eating horse meat. I bought some meat one time that I THINK was horse meat. Was supposed to be beef, but had an entirely different texture. It was quite tasty. Horses eat basically vegetation just like cows, so they are cleaner than chickens. If it was USDA inspected and approved, I would have no problem eating horse meat.

i don't have a problem with slaughter idea except there used to be a reaction if eating horse while on certain vaccines...saw that on a old episode of MASH...not sure if they figured a way around it.

just because they slaughter them in the US doesn't mean u have to eat them it just means that there is finally a market for horses and they aren't just starving to death like they are around here. My grandfather raises bucking horses and if they don't buck they are completely useless to him all they do is eat and they eat about 1 1/2 times what a cow does and you get no return on them.

Shutting down the slaughter plants to start with was a royally stupid thing to do. Ruined the horse industry!

Mrs. (WA) raises horses, and belongs to a breed association and also Backcountry Horsemen. Both organizations were in favor of the movement to resume horse slaughter.

IIRC, the gov't didn't "shut down" the horse slaughter plants, they just refused to fund the inspectors or something like that. Most of the horse meat goes for dog food. I'm a horseman and owner and I think it's only logical to have slaughter facilities for the unwanted, lame, crazy horses. But then I think we should be burying people standing up right to save space....so what do I know?

We have a mammoth donkey. People often ask WHY??? My response, If the economy gets any worse, we are going to eat him. I have to go feed him some expensive hay right now.

I'm not sure I want to eat my horse. But I don't
have a problem with someone else eating him. It
looks to me a lot better alternative than watching
him die a slow death in front of the hay feeder when
he is no longer fit to ride.

You guys could always do like New Orleans does. Bury your dead in a above ground vault. After 2 years you can open the vault; remove coffin; place remains in a special bag and put in the back of the vault.
The vault is now ready to bury another family member.

A vault gets passed down from generation to generation. My parents own 3 of them so we are covered from multiple deaths such as a car wreck.
My grandparents; parents; kids; and grandkids will all rest in the same spot as me.

thats just in the next town from me, its actually a good thing, in spite of having a race track in the town in the opposite direction from me, "horse' is a bad word these days, they eat, and need care and vet visits, and that costs money a lot of folks just dont have today, many of these folks are turning their horses out, either on range land, or up in the forest areas, as there is a wild horse heard up there, ive seen it twice in 40 years, and both times at daybreak and at above 8,000 feet on the mountain, there very cagy and stay hidden, they also have a vast area to roam in, but people dont realize that a horse that is raised domestically does not have the skills to live in the wild and usually starves to death , better there is a plant to take care of them

The people protesting horse slaughter wouldn't bother me so much if they'd pony up (pun intended) and help care for the abandoned horses, but they don't. They don't want the horsies to die, but they want someone else to foot the bill.

Glad to read such common sense reactions to this news. Many horse owners are unrealistic about the outcome of closing the slaughter houses. I have never understood why starving to death over the period of a year is less cruel than a day in a slaughter pen?

Who's going to open a packing plant for horses knowing that on a whim the government will shut you down - just like they did last time.

I don't see this actually changing anything.

Not really wanting to change the subject, BUT, I did hear a woman on the radio the other day talking about using DOGS for a meat source.
Now, If DOG and HORSE meat is legislated as ok for human consumption, how long before all the neighborhood dogs and cats and horses start disappearing anywhere within a 10 mile radius of a Chinese restaurant?

Best to offer them all in religious ceremonies. Sacrifice them to the rain gods. Cause THAT is the root of the problem ain't it?
