John Deere B Belly Plow

Hi guys it's Bryce. I just finished my 1947 Early Styled John Deere B and took it to plow day. I tried to pull my 2-14 trailed plow, but it was just too much for the little tractor. One of the guys there said that he knew of a guy trying to get rid of a belly mount plow for a JD B that works off the power lift? I was wondering if it was worth looking into. It is a 1-18 and is complete except for a few "easy to make brackets" ( or so I have been told... ) I was wondering if anyone out there had a few good pictures of one, and perhaps a few of how it hooks up on the tractor so that I could see what I am going to have to make! I attached a picture of the JD. THANKS!! Bryce

I'd like to see pictures also. I know there's a belly plow for the model H but I've not seen one for a B.

There is a cylcone B with a belly mower on
ebay right now. I think it was in Iowa?

But personally I think your transmission is too
fast in 1st gear to get a nice mowing job & if
the ground is wet you will leave marks. Then
again if the price is right for the mower go for
it.. Can always try it, & if your not happy you
can sell it again.. Or put it on another tractor.

(quoted from post at 11:47:09 04/29/13) My 43 JD B never had any problems pulling a JD 2 bottom with 2-14s. Was it set pretty deep? sod? Low gear?

I agree with you. I've pulled a #52(2-14's) with my '45 BO no problems but will make the BO bark.

My guess would be to check your carb adjustments. I had a 44A that had issues pulling a #44 2-16 plow, but when I cracked open the load needle about a half turn she had no problems pulling the plow.

As far as the belly mount plow, I have never heard of one, so I cannot offer any advice your way.

Maybe go to the JD forum and check archives. JD made a couple mounted plows for the Bs, As. One rig is a 2 way with right and left sides/plowshares- used one at a time for a up and back plowing pattern instead of around the land pattern and is real handy for gardens- think the JD forum has a thread with pictures of the rig in action. Single share rigs also made- and the 1-18 likely this kind. Front pulling tongue is mounted sort of like the AC snap coupler location in front of axle line and low- hit a big rock and you"ll stop but won"t flip backwards. One of early Ferguson designs for the "Auto plow" was mounted same way- single pulling stress low mounted, 1 or 2 upper lift and alignment mounts and in the case of JD the lift arms are in right area to use for single or double rigs. Mounted plow has advantages- like can lift sitting still and back up instead of having to be going forward so wheel lift clutch works and hard to back up a trailer plow, one reason the gardeners like them. Like the other guys said, open up that load mixture needle half a turn or more. You might need to check your timing as well. We pulled an old AC 2-14 trailer plow as deep as we wanted with a 1949 B but this was in nice south central Iowa soil.

I am pretty sure we have it adjusted right. It had the power for the most part, but in first gear it was pretty hard going. I also think that the soil might be to blame. It was an alfalfa field that hadn't been plowed it 20 years. Up here in north ID we have very think dark soil with a lot of clay, and I think it was just too much plow for that tractor. I called the owner of the plow and it sounded like he might just give it to me. He just finished custom building a Rumley Oil Pull replica, and is going to start make a WaterLoo Boy. Thanks for the help guys! Bryce

Bryce, if all the pieces are there for the mounted plow I say go for it....

I understand where you are coming from with the B not pulling the 2-14. A mid year B is a 2-14 tractor only in loamy soil. My late B can be overloaded with a 2-12 here in some of our soils even with new shears. Sometimes a 3-16 is too much for my 720 diesel as well. The size of plow you can pull is not governed by the folks on this board that dont understand heavy soil (one of my yankee friends says that we dont have soil, but rather concrete, after attending a local plowday). It's governed by what you can pull, granted that a plow with good shears and adjusted properly will draft much lighter.

Also be aware that there is a single bottom drawn plow. It is the #51 plow. It is available in a couple different widths.

nothing wrong with your tractor, its the dirt you were pulling it in. 2-14s is a lot of plow for that tractor unless its light soil. If you are in heavy clay, a 2 bottom can give a healthy G a good workout. A lot of plows around here have had a bottom removed for that reason.

Very nice job! I commend you for not being scared to get it dirty plowing. I've always said , dirt washes right off and what else is going to happen at plow day?

Bryce, your tractor has a high speed transmishion in that low in it is equal to second in the 41 to 44 model years and again in the pressed frame later B tractors. I had a 46 and all it would handle was 2-12" at 6" deep in heavy ground. If it was one with the other gearing you would not have noticed it like you did with the high speed gearing. And the tractors a couple of others said they did not have problems with have the slow speed gearing. My 46 B in low traveled the same speed as Dad's 49 B did in third plowing but his was governed at PTO speed and mine I had the throttle stop removed. Both tractors with 2-12" pull type plows.
