I've got a 1933 chevy pickup i'm playing with.It had an electric fuel pump when I bought it.I found a new old stock fuel pump from a guy that sells vintage chevy parts. He gave me a new diaphragm with the pump and told me to install it for the new gas.A year later the new diaphragm is bad.Anyone know what I could make a diaphragm out of,or where I could buy one? Thanks.

I had my vacuum tank/fuel pump out of my '29 LaSalle several years ago and needed a diaphram so went to a local seal supplier and they had different materials available and showed me what was gasoline proof and let me pick the product I wanted...I will include a link..I am sure they could help you.

Rubber is a perishable item. You can blame it on the gas all you want, but it is what it is. I don't subscribe to the new gas theory, I used to buy the bellows kits for the old A-C electric pumps when I was a kid in the '70s, and they aren't failing any faster today. Why did yours fail after a year? Possible U-V damage, the rivet for the pull rod pinched too tightly creating a stiff spot in the diaphragm and subsequent break, improper diaphragm preload during pump assembly, improper or damaged pump mechanism causing overstroke of diaphragm, or cheap vinyl based rubber compound. (too hard)

None of the stuff you mention could make the rubber turn soft and separate. The alcohol in the gas supposedly does this.

Try John Plaskan in New York. He has kits for all sorts of odd-ball pumps. Or Summers Rubber in Cleveland Ohio, they may have Viton in sheets so you can cut your own. Either of those two can tell you what you need.
