Another Barn Cupola Question

Thanks to all who responded to my first post about cupolas. I think I am going to go ahead with the cupola plan. Another question I have is does anyone know if there was a "standard" length so you knew if you should have one or two? I have seen many barns with one in the center, and I have also seen quite a few with two, one towards each end. My barn is 42ft long if that helps in making an informed suggestion.

I think our horse barn is 110 feet long there were 3 couplas on it, one blew off a few years ago, I see if I can get a pic for you tomarrow.

I found a website, can't remember where, some years ago when I built mine. Cupola should be about 1/7 of the length of the building if one cupola is used. That proportion worked good for my 44' x 32' barn, with one cupola. I used the same size, except two cupolas on my 28' x 64' pole barn and they all look good. Mine are totally decorative, not functional. My neighbor bought a pre-fab unit, which looks too small on his barn. I used common materials, nothing fancy, and have received lots of compliments on them.

My barn is 60" long. It has one cupola which is fully functional. The size of the cupola is 4" x 4". Here is a picture. Hope this helps.

I think aesthetics plays more of a role with the size of a cupolas than functionality. If it doesn't have a fan, functionally you would need as big of a cupolas as looks well to your building. Perhaps more than one.

My barn is 40 foot and it has one big one centered. Can't tell you how big it actually is. A previous post that mentions 1/7th would look about right though.

FYI: I have one each on my two barns (24"x40"x8"&30"x48"x12"). The one on the larger barn is a little bigger than the smaller barn. I have a 13 watt spiral fluorescent in each on an electric eye that have been there since 2002 and never been replaced.

Thanks again guys. I believe one large one in the center is the look I'll try to achieve.

Here is a pic of mine. It is not functional, just for looks since the building it can be seen from the road and the house. My wife was concerned about how a pole barn would look so I had to dress it up some to pass inspection. :)

Aaron, our original 32x58 foot dairy barn had one in the center. Do you have a source of cupolas? There is someone on the north side of MN 55 between Annandale and Rockford (wish I could narrow it more) who has many on display. FWIW, I sold mine over a decade ago for $200. Was about 4 feet square, with vane.

Hi Jim,
I am just watching craigs list and there are a few around the state advertised. My next door neighbor actually has one off his old barn, and I know he'll never use it, but I am sure if I ask him, it will not be for sale simply because someone wants it. What frustrates me most regarding that particular one is that it was my grandmother's dad that had that farm originally, and it would be neat to put that on my barn as that was where grandma grew up before she married grandpa who lived on the farm where I am now. If you hear of one for sale, I'd appreciate it if you sent me an email. I am actively looking, so we'll see what transpires.
