BUTLER TWP. - A daring thief cut down a utility pole and stole an electrical transformer, township police said.

Police said the utility pole was cut down in Beech Mountain and a transformer fastened to the pole was stolen. The pole was found near the lake in Beech Mountain.

Police said wires were attached to the transformer and pole, which is owned by PPL

Thats nuts, and how much power is typically in the primary wires, thousands of volts ? One loud pop should have self checked that problem.

It is also filled with PCB oil which he will have to stick his hands in ,and asbestos is the paper between the windings in some. These guys get killed all the time . Go on you tube and you can see a guy fried at the bottom of a pole.
You can hardly tell it's a human body.

You"re right about all the PCB having been removed. IT was [still can be] a big deal.
I cannot imagine anybody dropping a utility pole, with hot wires. Most around here have 7240 volts phase to ground, 12470 phase to phase. Kill you so fast as it came down you wouldn"t know it. The outage would be pretty dramatic.

Joe,
My B.I.L. was a lineman before he went in service in '44 and for many, many years after that.
He told me he changed the winding connection inside those PCB transformers all the time back in the old days by reaching right down in the oil to do it.
He is now past 85 and in better shape than most men his age.
Is it just that some people can tolerate these "dangerous" chemicals better than others?

Back in the 70's when I was a lineman we used to reach down in them and change the settings. Still have my arms.
