pocket knife as a tool

Went fishing, locked the old 75 dodge up at the landing, with the keys inside. I went to load the boat back up, and found my boo boo.I needed a tool, to raise the vent window lever, so I could reach thru the vent, and open the door. Could find nothing to use in the boat, or truck bed, so I took mt schrade oldtimer, out of my pocket, and slipped the longest blade, thru the rubber vent gasket, and under the wing window latch handle, and started lifting-prying upwards, untill the big blade sheared the piviot pin in the handle.Thankfully, the latch was moved enough, when it broke, that I could get the window open and open the door. I went to our local Ace Hardware store, and they had quit handling pocket knives. Now I don't want just any old pocket knife, I want a schrade 3 bladed uncle henry, or oldtimer in the 3 1/4 " length. It fits in my pocket well, is always available, and I use the electrician blade, for a lot of things besides stripping wire, the shortest blade ( if kept sharp), is my casterating blade, and then the longest blade does's every thing else, from peeling apples, cleaning fingernails, scrapping gasket material, cutting hoses, cutting rope ECT. OH by the way! Did you folks know that cleaning your fingernails in public, is very crude! SWMBO thinks I should go hide and do it! Kinda like going to the potty! She also doesn't like me to whip out my oldtimer, at the resturant, and pick out the crab meat from the leggs! Just doesn;t appreciate a useful tool! Well I feel hand cuffed without my pocket knife, and am ordering one from Schrade, online.I just wondered if any one else depended on their knives like me?

I pretty much feel naked without a knife in my pocket.

I also prefer the 3 blade stockman patterns in knives. Usually only one blade is sharp at a time as i quickly dull the other ones doing jobs with the wrong tool.

Yes. I have a Colonial 3 blade barlow style knife. Big blade is a hooked carpet cutter. middle is normal. 3rd blade is a screwdriver with one edge sharp. It is a keeper.
It was from an era of high carbon and good tempering practices. It be sharp! Jim

Yep.Only Its my 'Spinden's Farm tool',not my pocket knife.I carry it everywhere....

Take that knife to anywhere that still sells them, or write the company.
Old Timers are guaranteed for anything except loss.
You may need to have all the pieces to return.
I carry mine 24 x 7.

My self I like the Military knifes like the Kabar and the Sog I carry in my pocket ALL the time. I also have a good say 20 plus other ones that I carry from time to time but those 2 fit so well and I know they will not break unless I do something stupid with them. Plus they hold an edge a real long time

So where'd you go fishing, and did you do any good? I went to Lawrence Lake, in your neck of the woods last fall, didn't even get a bite. Did manage to drop my trolling motor battery out of the back of the pickup and cracked it on the concrete boat launch. Swell. Saw the biggest perch of my entire life at Lake Kapowsin when I was a kid- thing must have been a foot long.

Also heard about a kid in Wyoming who accidentally brought his pocket knife to school. Somebody saw it, told the teacher, who told the principal. Strict "no weapons" policy at school, of course. He calls the kid into the office, asks for an explanation. Kid says "I feed the cows before school every morning, forgot to take it out of my pocket". Prinicpal says "Be sure not to bring your cow-feeding tool to school in the future- somebody might mistake it for a pocket knife. Now go back to class".

Nice to see that not everyone has taken complete leave of their senses in today's politically correct world.

For the first 20 years or so, I never carried a pocket knife. Once I started I wondered how I got along without one. I care a small Case Sodbuster every day and have an Uncle Henry I keep in a drawer for skinning squirrels or rabbits. I"d rather go out without my pants than without my knife.

I keep a Gerber tool, on my hip at all times. Works great for battery tightenins, loose nut tightenins, cutting, screwin, filin, fingernail pickin, etc!
Gerber

I just have a Stanley utility knife, that folds I carry. I like how you can switch the blade out and then its always sharp. And you can beat on the one end, its pretty heavy duty. Like when you have one on you for cutting twine string etc.

I have 2 or 3 folding knives with the replaceable utility blades. Always sharp and I cut a lot of twine, not so good for anything but cutting so I carry pliers in a holster on my hip.

Used to carry a lock blade all the time. Changed to a multitool and now have 2. One for dress and one for kicking around. I also carry a mag light sized led flashlight all the time. I use that more than the multitool.

I graduated from HS in "64. got a 8 OT for present, have carried only 3 knives since, wore out the first two OTs and working on third one now. Most likely will loose it to nursing home staff in yrs to come. I buy them for family and friends from EBAY. Get an american made on, that says usa on the blade. Older ones will have SHRADE on the blade and even older ones will say Walden NY.I collect anything unusal and have one with the match striker on the big blade. A serated area where you put your thumb nail to open it that was used to strike farmer matches

I carry a pair of pliers almost identical to yours, except mine has a flat blate screwdriver, it"s made by "Diamond Tools". I don"t go anywhere without it either.

Had that happen twice with two different outfits two hundred miles from the house years ago. One was a Ford truck with the vent window and the other was my new car. Used the knife on the truck and a piece of barb wire on the car. Kind of gives you a sick feeling when you can see the key but can't get to it. Just lost my small pocket knife around here the other day so had to get a larger one.

The Schrade factory in Ellenville,NY has shut down years back . You may want to check the country of origin on any you ordered off the internet. I'm guessing China.Lots of imported Schrades.Last Uncle Henry I saw said imported right in the ad.

I carry a Gerber Spring assited knife. It clips onto theedge of your pocket and you never know you have it on. When you have a hold of something in your left hand it comes out and pops open with just the right hand. Never awake without it. Sometimes it's even on my house lounge sweats.

I also have a U H thst I never leave home without, last one I had let some one else use it and broke the blade. New U H schrade are made in china, (JUNK) had to get a used one at a gun show. Pete

Every vehicle I own or have owned first thing is put spare key under license plate. If someone has enough ambition to take plate off they generly have enough ambition to get a job Nwe truck without chip spare will only open door , but thats usually good enough

I had that happen to me on my 73 gmc, I used the oil dipstick to slip threw the rubber and get the vent window open, like you did with your knife! Lol

Thats funny ,my dad used his dipstick when I was a kid he locked his keys in his brand new 1964 Pontiac Catalina at the New York Worlds Fair. He did bend it up so bad he had to buy a new dipstick.

There nice, I like that when the one side is dull, there's another
side to be used, so if it breaks off one side, your still in luck

I to carry a knife, dad did, gpa did, now one of my boys does. Anyway couple years ago I was helping neighbor casterate some calves. He kept saying his knife was to dull so I gave him mine. Couple weeks later was at a campfire with folk and one needed a knife to cut a roll apart..so I handed him my pocket knife.. Said after cutting roll that it was a sharp knife.. I said .. yep thats what the ole boy down the road said couple weeks ago after he used it to casterate his calves.. LOL LOL he didnt eat the roll....

I carried a Case Electricians knife for 35 years. Finally wore the handles almost off it, blade was getting loose, etc. Tried to find another, but Case discontinued that model. Settled for a Swiss Army knife, which works fine. I got an Old Timer from the NRA after a contribution to them. Good knife, but made in China. I can't imagine not having a pocket knife, might as well not have your pants on.

I lost my pocket knife a while back and was looking to buy a U.S.A. made knife to replace it, all I could find was a Buck stockman style nice and small 2 blade pocket knife, cost way more than the chineese garbage but worth it,too bad more folks dont look at the country of origen before buying stuff I also found Leatherman makes a nice folding lockblade for around $20 thats the one I carry at work has a pocket clip and bottle opener too!!

I carry a Leatherman AND a Schrade Vise-grip multi-tool (sadly discontinued). Both sit in leather sheathes on my belt. I've lost way too many pocket knives since our clothing makers started making pockets out of tissue paper like cloth. I lost my late fathers knife out of my pocket that way!

If you're buying a Buck, be advised you can get the China Bucks at Wally World and elsewhere, but you can also order an American made Buck fromt he company for about twice the price.
