Lost another veteran

I just found out that we lost another WW2 vet. He used to be my neighbor, but I never heard him talk of his service time. He enlisted in the army right after graduation from high school. He served in the European theater and was a Member of the Second Divvision 23rd Infantry Regiment, Company B, during WW2. He was involved in three major campaigns, the Battle of the Bulge, the Ludendorf Bridge and Taking of Berlin. During his service he was a BAR man and fought in Belgium, Germany, France, Luxemburg and Czechoslovakia. He received numerous medals and among them were, American Theater Bronze Star, Purple Heart and French Belgium Re DE Goerre Victory Medal. When he came home, he went to college, got a BS in Elementary Education and taught school. He moved out of the community into a high-rise apt. and I lost track of him. He was 87. One less of the Greatest Generation.

GOD BLESS HIM! Sounds like he was quite a man.

Thank you for NOT listing his name nor a link to his obituary... that is just a way for people without scruples to possibly take advantage of his loved ones or misuse his personal information.

Sweetfeet, I agree completely with you regarding "Thank you for NOT listing his name nor a link to his obituary... It is a sad commentary today, that personal information made public can open a Pandoras' box. Sometime this week, in the next county over, we will be burying a young soldier killed by an IED. As luck would have it, Pastor Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Ks. got wind of it. They or some their congregation are planning on protesting the funeral. This soldier comes from a small Appalachian mtn. town whose citizens have fought in every war since the revolution. I'm not to sure about what kind of reception Phelps will get. I don't think those of "The Greatest Generation" would agree with 'Pastor' Phelps or his actions, I know my father would not have. Paul, sorry for highjacking your post, mebbe I should have started a new one.

Tim, Someone needs to get in touch with the "Rolling Thunder" motorcycle group group. They will put up a perimeter around the funeral service and keep the Westboro Wackos away.

Or the Patriot Guard motorcycle group.
They put on a very respectful showing when we burried my Marine nephew.
God bless. We owe those vets more than we can ever repay.

The Greatest Generation that made this country what it is and made strong soldiers for Korea, Vietnam and the many conflicts we have fought since then.

My heartfelt THANKS to ALL veterans.

Ain't it ashamed that this is what Topeka is recognized for. A while back a couple of his grandaughters skipped out on them. Of course the news media hears this and goes to interview them. The family said they did not know where they went. Get your veterans there to hide them.

Tim Barnes,
Maybe later (now may not be the right time when the family is so grief stricken)... please tell them that there are a lot of people who appreciated his service and sacrifice to our country - and who are very sorry he paid the ulitmate price.

And the guys below are right... tell the family they can contact the Patriot Guard (or the other group) - I've seen them in action via news coverage. Admirable group.

I keep waiting for a grieving father to eliminate the Westboro's from the face of the earth in what would only be justifiable homicide in its purest form.

Wife and I went to the funeral of a vet at the military cemetery at Ft Huachuca Az on Monday. Taps always brings tears to my eyes. BUT... The flag folding ceremony is a breath taking ritual to observe. Two non-coms fold the flag with the one at the stars giving the signals. What an awesome tribute to a departed Vet.
