Cub cadet sputters out when PTO is engaged

My #2135 cub cadet lawn tractor sputters out when the PTO has been engaged for a short time. When I disengage PTO, the tractor runs fine. It is when the PTO has been running for 20 minutes, that it sputters out.

im thinking you have a bad bearing on the mower deck, after a short time heat is building up and causing the bearing to seize up and stop the engine, id drop the deck so you can get at all of it, and carefully check all the spindles and idlers for roughness or any other sine of something being wrong, some of these spindles do have replaceable bearings, too

If the bearings check out it could be a short in the clutch coil. When they go bad they draw more power than the battery and charging system can provide. Eventually it runs the battery down and there isn't enough juice for the ignition. Turn the PTO off and the charging system can keep up again.

I think Jim has your problem. There is something wrong with the electric clutch or your charging system. These lawn tractors do not charge at a high amperage so if the electric clutch is pulling too many amps then it will lower the battery voltage a little bit and then the electronic ignition will start to act up.

I have a ammeter made just to check these clutchs with. They should pull under 10 amps but I have seen them pull over thirty when the coil was bad. Much over 15 amps and the charging system will not keep up.

I have also noticed that when this occurs, the engine will not turn off with the key. I need to choke it to get to stop. Even the kill switch in the seat will not cut the engine off.

is it JUST the pto - or is there something attached to the pto?

In other words is there a load being put on the engine when you engage the pto?

Try taking off the belt and engaging the PTO and see if it still does what you say. That will eliminate pretty much everything mechanical and confirm an electrical problem which is quite likely...
