I don't know much about Dairy cows but was wondering about the big free-Stall barns. Do the same cows go to the same free-stall every time. I know in the old stanchion barns you let the cows in and they would always go to there given assigned stanchion. Just wondered if they did the same in the free-stall barns or do they just go to any given stall that suits them that particular day. I feed out about ten steers a year and I never really noticed the same steers laying down in the same spot all the time. Although I don't have free-stalls and my steers are only around about 9 months.

i haul free stall sand to many framers with free stalls and have asked them that very question some say most do and then some say they do not but all say that some or a few will never lay in them
We used old style byre stalls up untill 1970, then we moved the cows into the new cubicle free stall house...the poor old cows stood looking for a while then sorted out their own stalls as in the old byre!. Nowadays some of the older cows will fight for their own stall, but most just lie where ever is available.

It"s not uncommon to house about 10-15% more cows in the free stall barn than there are stalls. Some may choose the same, some may never use them, and never will all be lying down at the same time.

There always seems to be cows are that a lot smarter than others. When we were milking, we had several cows that would lie in the free stalls backwards. The idea of a free stall bar is to have the cows poop outside of the area that hey lie in. When they lie in there backwards it can get messy pretty fast. The cows that would lie in there backwards drove my dad bonkers.
