It took about 10hr from start to finish.

I used below grade wire encased in conduit and dug it in 18 inches. The trench was about 40' long. I got some great advice from this forum last year before I started.

This was only one of many projects undertaken last summer.

One advantege of hand digging, you can save and re-lay the sod. After the first rain you can't tell it's been dug up. Nice job!

Oh man - you aint kidding - and forget just having good dirt - I'd kill just to be able to DIG, without hitting big rocks every second shovel full.

You have NO idea how good you've got it!
 
Kill to have frost out of the ground so I could dig, or snow off the lawn so it would turn green, or........

Sigh.

I wouldn't have to dig much deeper to hit hard pan clay. I got lucky with the dry winter last year. It made the digging much easier.

And no rocks helps too. I've dug a few stumps on the farm which weren't so easy.
