fATHER AND UNCLE IN SCHOOL AT RAYMOND,IOWA

Local paper ran old articles......from early last century. County superintendent toured rural schools and commented on the "imbecility" of the students. Guess it meant something different back then.

They had more students there than in our rural school; we had 5-8 students most of the time. I went through all 8 grades there, then had to drive 10 miles to go to a decent high school.

I got a good education in both places; neither school had athletics to distract us from our studies.

Yes, besides more wires needed to tie it up I wonder if it has a removable lid at the elbow to brush out that long section. If I tried that it would build up creosote and eventually make one hot chimney fire!

I attended a 4 room school house. Three grades per classroom. We had the "big" class with 5 students. The next grade older and the next grade younger only had 3. The school was closed in 1982 when I was in 5th grade.

It was a "public" school the district leased from the local Catholic church - we had nuns teaching and drawing public school salaries. Some heads at the ACLU would have exploded.

No tellin' how many of these kids had drugs in their backpacks. Probably even a pistol or two. They were probably sexting as well. Possibly the teacher may have been seeing one of the older boys privately after class. Oops! Wrong century. Sorry. My bad.
Actually these classrooms turned out some of the brightest folks who ever lived. To bad we can't go back to this type of school setting.

Brings back memories. Hard to remember back that far, but I think we had about a dozen students in our one room. No lights, old Army stove sat on the end wall. Remember one cold winter day our sweet, heavyset lady teacher had just loaded some extra coal and was standing about a foot in front of the stove, reading to us. The bottom damper on the lower door was slightly cracked open for a little air. The teacher always dressed in dark navy blue dresses that came about six inches below her knees, and matching nylons. It was so quiet in the room that all you could hear was her voice when she spoke and the slight roar of the fire. Took about five minutes and pretty soon we heard a faint rumble from the stove, a few more seconds and we heard it again. The teacher wasn't paying any attention to it but the whole class knew what was going to happen in a minute or two. The third time it rumbled it was accompanied by a huge explosion of coal gas. The stove jumped a little off the floor and a big cloud of gray smoke came out of the damper. Teacher kind of jumped up and to one side and looked back at the stove and said, "Oh,My Goodness". The whole room burst out laughing for several minutes. Finally the teacher told us to calm down and pay attention. We just kept laughing. She said,"What is so funny?" We all at the same time just pointed our finger at her and said,"Look at your stockings!" She looked down. Somehow, the explosion had cut both nylons off completely around her legs, about halfway up from the tops of her shoes to the bottom of the hem on her dress. The bottoms had fallen down on top of her shoes. She said, "Oh,My." and proceeded on with the lesson. After that she always stood off to the side of the stove. You had to have been there but it was funny.

Not school, but 19 of 22 cousins. My sister is in the back row, second from right. Since she's in the picture, I assume I am, but the only one I can find that could be me is the top of a head you see directly to the left of the kid wearing a sailor's "dixie cup".

Chronologically, I was 9th and my sister was 7th.

The fellow all the way to the left is now 83 years old, owns a construction company, and also owns somewhere around 100 old tractors. Up to a few years ago, he used to plant a few acres of oats every year, cut it with a binder, and give a threshing demonstration at the local county fair. He's the second oldest of the bunch.

We've only lost three of the bunch, two spouses not included. When one gal lost her husband a few years ago, the preacher at the funeral announced from the pulpit he's never seen that many relatives at a funeral before.

The picture I was really looking for. The entire student body of a one room grade school I went to, through the 8th grade, at one point in time.

My sister is the tall gal in the back row, and I'm on her right. (Left looking at the pic). From the writing on the pic, it was 1945.

I thought that stove pipe was asking for trouble. I'm betting the stove was taken out for the hot months, though. That would mean you would have a good clean pipe at least once a year!

What a wonderful world.no hoodies, no baggy pants with crotch at knees, and on & on. Those children actually learned the three Rs!

I attended A little school out in the Country when I was young. This lttle School house only had two rooms. I am at: front row first on left, my older brother standing behind me. Three of these kids have passed away.
This was Halloween get together. 1942 or 43.
