Growing sunflower question

I planted 14 acres of sunflowers the a week ago today. I went out, and in a 50 square foot area there are a few that have popped up maybe 5-10 which is horrible. I am afraid I planted them to deep. They are on 36" rows with a spacing of 7" in the row. Should they all be coming up at the sametime? Is it normal for just a few to come up first?

I have always broadcasted the seed. But then again I don"t harvest them (for the deer). Mine usually come up at about the same time. How moist and warm is the soil?

I have only planted them once for a Bio-Fuel test I used a two row planter and put them 1"-1 1/2" deep they all grew fine I do remember some coming up a day or two sooner cnt

Soil temps are in the 60s, and we have had alot of moisture I live in Eastern TN. But I have a hard crust at the moment on them. Going to rain tomorrow which will help, but I don't think the crust is the problem. They aren't coming up in the few areas where there isn't crust either.
Well there is alot of money for seed and spray down the drain.

I planted them a 1" 1/2 deep, but then I cultipacked them because the spray I used prowl h20 and spartan 4f said it would kill them if it came in contact with the seed. So you do remember a few of them coming up early?

How deep did you plant them? In various I.H. planter manuals, they say shallow early, deep late (to get down where there is moisture). Did you dig up any seeds to see if they germinated?

Maybe you planted them upside down.8) If the crust is real hard and it doesn't rain for a day or two, I would run your packer over the field to break the crust. I had to do that to an alfalfa field once.

I live in Extreme west Tenn and can tell you the soil is just not warm enough here for Sunflower.
We plant 20 + acres each year. You may get by but this has been an extremely late spring. Think you are about two weeks early.

you may want to replate to corn or beans small fields of flowers are bad for bird damage guys tryed flowers here in eastern side off South Dakota need to plant big fields 160 or more acers and knot to close to water as the birds will do harvest for you

Just went out in the dark and checked and couldn"t find a seed that hadn"t germinated. They are in all different stages. Some just starting to crack the seed, some alittle out of the seed, some just under the soil, ect... I think I am going to be ok. I planted them for a dove field this is my first year. there is a 40% chance of rain tomorrow, and 70% Friday so I think the crust will be ok till then. Just scared to me not see them all coming up at the sametime. This is my first time for sunflowers.

I grow sun flowers for cutting for the farm stand, so I plant them differently but with results like you describe.
I plant two rows (100' long every ten days. One end of the row will come up 4 or 5 days quicker. It seems that even in a small area the Sun and Soil temp play a big part in this.

Haven't planted them for a few years here in eastern South Dakota... Had trouble with birds... and worms eating the seeds on the plant. We planted with a 7000 Deere using the corn meters at about 2 inches deep and a population of about 12 to 15k.... (we plant corn here at around 21 to 25K) We didnt plant till around end of May to first week of June... Ground has to be plenty warm... much warmer than for corn or beans... and crusting of the ground can cause problems... We did have to rotary hoe them a couple times to get them to come up after a heavy rain. Be careful at harvest time... Sunflowers are the worst crop to combine for fire danger...
