Plant some roots

I got asparagus, rhubarb and horseradish roots, gonna plant them today.

Do they want a lot of sun?

Asparagus needs full sun and planted to a depth of 18" as I recall. Rhubarb will do okay for us in part shade and best in full sun, it does not need to be planted deep. I never grew horseradish so I don't know about that.

My rhubarb was planted out in the middle of the yard in full sun. It seems fine, except when I split the roots up. None of the replants do very well.

(quoted from post at 07:55:22 04/16/13) We planted asparagus Sat. Instructions said to dig a ditch 8" deep and spread the roots out about 18" apart. bury the crowns 2" deep and cover them again as they sprout. Ellis

That sounds right. Asparagus is kind of picky that way.

I am thinking of putting post hole digger on tractor and dig holes about 18" apart, foot deep and put in 6" of manure.

My shoulder is not up for that much digging.

I hear you on the shoulder issues. Asparagus is a very heavy feeder, so that 6 inches of manure should give it a very good start.

In Iowa and Minnesota rhubarb generally does best in full spring sun. In 2012 Iowa had a very early spring and then hot dry weather. The rhubarb didn't make a crop last year. Sun requirements might depend on your location, are you in Arizona sun or Michigan sun?

I'm in southwest Iowa. Yes, our rhubarb suffered a bit last year, but it still produced way more than we needed. Our rhubarb is on the east side of a small shed, and patially shaded by a peach tree. The rhubarb gets full sun until mid-afternoon, and then it is in full shade. It has also been transplanted several times from its original location. It's kind of like a weed. It just grows. Nothing seems to bother it.
