The replacement regulator purchased at rural king looks like the one below. Problem is how do you wire it? There was no info and very little clues how to make it work on positive or negative ground, as claimed. Sure be nice if they had included intructions.

The old regulator has 3 coils or 3 relays, replacement only has 2 relays.

Replacement regulator.
ome & probably the one you bought merge the current regulation & voltage regulation functions by winding both coils on a common relay core.
Hence, the 2 vs 3. It does not care whether positive or neg ground & wiring will be same. Polarity comes from which side of battery is grounded to chassis & how you polarize the generator. Since you already had generator charging, then it is already polarized. Wiring: ARM on VR to ARM on gen. Fld on VR to Fld on gen. Gnd on VR to Gnd on gen. BATT on VR to load side of ammeter. Your done! Facing the 3 terminals, they are BATT-ARM-Fld as read left to right. Some times ARM is marked GEN.

JMOR,
I think the battery terminal may be marked with an L? Sure wish it had the paper work with it. May have to guess at the F and A terminals. The old VR is battery, Armature and Field. May use ohmmeter, look for the terminal with a path to ground and guess it's the field terminal.

George - If the VR has 4 terminals they should be connected as follows:

B (or BAT) - to ammeter
G (or GEN) - to generator A or ARM post
F (or FLD) - to generator F or FLD post
L (or LOAD) - to "hot" side of load switches (ignition/lights)

Heres how to wire it, same info I already posted below but you asked again and Im here to help best I can:

BAT on VR to Load (NOT battery/starter) side of ammeter

FLD on VR to gennys FLD Post

ARM/GEN on VR to gennys ARM post

LOAD on VR wires up to BAT INPUT terminal on lights or ignition switch, it furnishes hot battery voltage for loads.

Often on those 4 terminal VR"s GEN/ARM is off on one side or underneath all alone

If the VR isnt marked, one thats open circuit to case frame is BAT,,,,,One with very low ohms to case frame is FLD,,,,,,,One with maybe 20 to 50 ohms to case is GEN/ARM,,,,,,,,LOAD terminal has low resistance over to BAT terminal

The VR DOES NOT GET POLARIZED, ONLY the Genny, so if its polarized youre good to go.....

MAKE SURE THE VR HAS A GOOD GROUND

Got it now????????

best wishes

Bob,
Got the terminal ID from ebay:
Terminal ID: Light-Battery-Field-Armature on Bottom of Regulator (underneath)

The terminal on the left has an L stamped on it. Will look for B, F and A.

Who would have thunk that the terminal on the bottom goes to the armature?

Wonder if the light is an idiot light or headlights, which it doesn"t have at this time?

Hope this works.

You may want to check to see if you have a two brush or three brush generator before hooking up the new regulator.

Sounds like your new regulator is set up for a three brush generator. Better take the steel band off the back of the generator and count how many brushes it has inside.

John,
No steel band. Took genny apart, 2 brushes. Jessie sent me a wiring diagram for the newer regulator. Think I've got it figured out. Let you all's know tomorrow evening.
Thanks.

George, glad you discovered that, thanks for lettign us know, LIKE I TOLD YOU MANY 4 POST VR'S HAVE ARM/GEN OFF ON ONE SIDE OR UNDERNEATH ALL BY ITSELF

Im glad to hear yours wasnt an exception lol Although about alllllll Ive seen were that way a guy learns NEVER SAY NEVER LOL

Congratualtions best wishes n God Bless ya George, take care now, keep us posted
