I bred a pair of twin heifers last summer. The first one calved today. WOW! She sure put that cage that I built to the test! That's one mean little cow. I dropped the cage over it and she was bawling like crazy with her tongue hanging out. She was bumping her nose on the bottom of the cage, even took off chasing the other cows when they tried to get around her after I left.
Hope her sister isn't any worse!

Ok, I don't remember all your explanation of the thoery of it earlier, so got some questions. As I understand it, you drive up with the cage on the front end loader. How do you get the calf to stay still long enough to lower the cage over him?

What is the cow doing while you are working on the calf, or rather, where are you standing while working on the calf and how do you stay out of the cow's way?

Sounds like a neat project. You may have a sideline job there.

I took a cage from a poly chemical tank and put pins on it so it fits the three point hitch. I saw her out there right after she had the calf and quick went out and dropped it over the wet calf.

Earlier this morning I dropped it over a dry one that was up already. That one was curious enough to pretty much just stand there and let me back up the her. I had all but her head in when I started to let it down.

I just climb in,tag and vaccinate, then climb back out over the back of the seat, start the tractor, lift it and drive away. The cow stays on the outside pawing and bellering,I'm inside with the calf, work fast and get out of there.

She almost looks like she thinking about getting up and coming after you and your camera. I'm glad your cage worked out for you. I wondered if it would be heavy duty enough to keep a mad cow off you while you worked on her little one.
Nice job on the quick attach for your loader too. I just paid over 500 dollars for one last
fall for my Kubota.

No,I've tried to get her to be the rodeo clown, but she just wants to be the announcer.

No way that would ever work on a holstein.

You usually have to all but park the quad on top of them to catch them.

Randy, cut the front of the cage lower and it'll be easier to access from the tractor seat.....

It's not bad like it is. I just step on the 3pt arm to get in,then I welded a big piece of angle iron inside for a step. I step on that getting in and back out.

Just a thought. Second thought, was, don't keep that hussy around too long. Put her and the calf on the next boat to the auction. Most of my mommas will let us work on the calf with not much more than a nose into seeing what we're doing, but when one tries to trample us and anything else within range, she buys a ticket to wherever but here.
