anyone every sharpend sickle sections on a New Idea 30A mower? i inherated it from my uncle along with a Case rotary hoe and a oliver running gear, any help would be appricated, thanks!

That was common and normal but it was an underserated or smooth section, the top serated that some are putting on now but were not designed for hay cannot be sharpened with much luck or lasting. The bottom serated you could sharpen multiple times and I consider them way too high in price to not sharpen. When it gets to a buck fifty per section (most places) and a 7' mower taking 28 sections then a half hour sharpening is way cheaper. And you can sharpen them a dozen or more times.

You can replace them in about the same amount of time that it would take to sharpem them. The cost of new is not that great, and rather reasonable in my opinion.

I use a Kosh double bar sickle mower. I would guess that over the life of the sickle, I sharpen them over 100 times. By the time you replace the sections, once or twice, the holes on the sickle bar are worn out.

One pass with an angle grinder will make them sharper than new. Those who know how sharpen knives. those who cant sharpen replace.

Back in the day, Dad had a double bevel grindstone. WE sharpened the sections every year. Still got that stone around somewhere.
