orchard grass hay

Mine is orchard grass, which blooms early, trifoil, Timothy, broom grass, red clover and reed canary grass.

I love orchardgrass but your first cutting will get rank fast (hard to get it cut before it heads most years) I would also plant some alfalfa or clover with it to help fix some nitrogen.

thanks for the replys.think ill do what old suggested and just get a horse pasture mix.prolly be the best best thing to do.

My hay all goes to race horses. Orchard is the dominate grass, but I add Timothy and blue, and lately a little perrenial rye. The grasses all mature at different times. It is impossible to cut hay before it heads. Sounds good on paper but weather makes the rules. I do not put clover in my grass hay fields. I do put white dutch clover in my pastures for nitrogen. Have had no luck with red clover in pastures. Timothy is good in hay fields but will not stand up to pasture grazing pressure.

We try to avoid fescue but it creeps in everywhere.....birds?

Edd makes a good point, it's great to say you'll get all the hay of before it blooms, but it rarely happens. My fields are usually too wet to get out early and the weather never does what I need it too. Reed Canary makes decent hay if you can get it early. Thing is it tend to grow in low fields that never dry out till the middle of July or later and by then the stuff is 4 foot tall and stemmy. Around here Orchard usually follows Timothy for blooming. Last year the Orchard was 3 weeks ahead of the Timothy! You never know what a year will bring.
