Transmission fluid leaks

Greetings. I am new to this forum and the new proud owner of a Ford 9n tractor. I was hesitant at first to purchase something so old but I was assured that these tractors are simple enough to work on and parts are available. Besides, with the wealth of knowledge that I have seen on this forum, I knew there would always be someone available to help. Well, now that time has come. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. My 9n is leaking transmission fluid from two places - the PTO and where the right arm attaches to the tractor (not sure what it is called, but I attached a photo). I have taken the PTO shaft out, removed one snap ring but cannot seem to get it apart to replace the seal. I read something about putting it in a vice grip and tapping the but end of the shaft and that it would just come out. The problem is that there are tiny metal ridges preventing the shaft from sliding out (see the photo). So my first question is how do I get this thing apart so that I can replace the seal? My second question is, to fix the other leak which is coming from where the arm attaches to the tractor (see photo), I removed the one bolt (the smaller one) but the big one just seems to turn and turn without coming out. Does it just pull out? How do I get this part off so that I can replace the gasket (assuming that there is a gasket here)? Alternatively, would you recommend a JB weld around it instead? Thank you for any help you can provide on these two issues!

I haven't worked on one, but from the picture, I would widen the vise jaws out to support the top cover and then try to tap the shaft out. Should just be a bearing there that the shaft slides thru I would think. The snap ring groove is probably messed up a little. The two studs I would assume are threaded thru the transmission case. The one that just turns has probably eaten the threads out of the case and the oil is leaking out. Might be able to get it to come out by putting a little pressure behind the cover if you can get a screwdriver or something in the crack and then try turning the nut. Just my ideas, somebody else may have a better idea.

Here is the 2n9n8n forum on here.

You will get more views on your post and help there.

Here is how to do what you are asking.

Here is what Bruce says--------------------------PTO SEAL REPLACEMENT --- While you have the PTO shaft out, it would be a good time to replace the seal on it. It"s got two spring clamps around it. Take your needle nose pliers & remove the one in the front. Then, hang the shaft & bearing housing in your vice & tap the butt end of the shaft; the bearing cap will come off (and the shaft will land on your foot). Then, remove the other spring clip from the other side of the seal. At this point, remember that you never bought a seal driver & go get a B socket & drive the seal out. If you have the new style seal, the white side goes out. Put some grease on it..Bruce.

This is the entire post about the subject. Good reading.

I don't remember how to make the links click-able, just copy and past link into your browser.

In regards to the bolt leaking in the rear axle, if you drain the fluid and pull the axle off you will get the to the nut on the back side. Given that it has probably been loose for a while, I would replace it with a new one. When you install it make sure you either use an impact wrench or have somebody tap hard on the outside while you tighten the inside. I "hand" tightened one and it still leaks, but so little that it is insignificant. Not a hard project, just a little time consuming. The Ford forum has lots of good info also.

Thank you for the reply. The messed up groove is probably why the shaft is stuck and won't tap out. I just wasn't sure if it was supposed to be that way or if over time, the wear and tear on the PTO created those "ridges." I guess I could use a dremmel to smooth the "ridges" above the groove and then maybe some WD-40 to help the shaft slide out.

Thank you for the reply! Do you mind explaining what you mean by pulling the axle off? Is the axle what I called an "arm" in my original post? If so, that is what I am having trouble removing because the bigger of the two bolts just keep turning without going in or out. Does it just pull out?
