Why is it on Craiglist when people type the phone number they put some words and some numbers ? Example : Two oh one NINE nine nine -five 612. Is this something to do with bots ?

was told that automatic spam can't read it that way so you don't get all the spam mail....

I can see the concern of putting your number out there for all the world to see. But on the other hand the spammers surely have software that starts with 000-000-0000 and dials every possible number looking for suckers. The KEY is NEVER reply to those texts. Your reply confirms that it IS a viable number and that YOU ARE a potential sucker.

That's the way I understood it too. It takes a real-and serious human being to read and dial your number spelled out like that. And no scam emails show up either.

It eliminates spam like the others have said. When I sell I block my email and spell out a few digits of my number. I have never had a spam problem. My wife now, she leaves her email open and types her actual number, she gets bombed with spam every time.
