smoking farmall m

bought a m that had been sitting awhile outside started right up and ran fine now you start it up and it smokes until you run it hard for awhile could it be oil rings or are the valve guides letting oil by

If it sat a long time good chance the rings are sticking and that will cause that to happen. Me I would up a 1/4 cup of ATF in all the cylinders and let it sit 24 hours or so then pull the plugs back out spin it over and run it

Yes, could be either or both. My dad's H smoked a lot when I got it, but I have been working it more and it only smokes a little on startup now.

What Old said...And I might add,Put it to work and pull the snot out of it a couple hours or so.May or may not help, but worth a shot.Steve

I had an M that acted like that. It needed a head job. It would smoke like a chimney until the head got warmed up enough to tighten up those valve guides a bit. It never went away completely but did get better. I had the head reworked and they put purdy new seals on it.
