Has America really gotten this bad?

I posted a local ad on Craigslist for two pieces of equipment I wanted to sell and didn't get not one response the first week so I bumped the ad back up to the top to try one more time.Within ten minutes I had a guy that claimed he was in one state when the # he used was from a landline phone in a state a long ways away text me wanting one of my items but he would only pay with cashiers check and was ready to buy right now without even talking to me or seeing up close pics or getting more info but he would take care of the shipping.I got two more texts from him with more B/S about needing my address and info so he could just wire the money to my account--yea Right! While all this is going on I get basically the same B/S on my other item from a totally different #.Has America really gotten bad enough that a honest "works hard everyday for what hes got" guy cant even list something for sale without deadbeat buzzards waiting in the corner to swoop in and try to run a scam and get your money? One of my items was J.D. green and I would really like to give this guy an up close and personal knock his head on it look.I think this ended my dealings with selling on Craigslist.

Your "buyer" probably wasn't even from the USA, had a scammer try that on me once, "made a mistake and made out the check for too much, when you get the check send him the difference western union" that's what he said. I told him cash only, no western union.
Now i put "cash only " on my adds.

Scammers can be a hassle on CL but where else can you post ads with that kind of exposure for free? I have three simple rules....don't trust anybody, don't hold anything for anybody, and show me the money...CA$H ONLY!

I dunno, I guess it"s how you take it. I listed 2 furniture items on CL late yesterday. Got a lot of calls on one item and a few on the other. One item was gone by 9 this morning, the other gone before 7 PM this evening.
You just have to be patient and smarter than the idiots that think you might be dumber than them. Oh, and listing your items at a good price in the beginning seems to bring the real people with cash in their hands in a hurry. Price it on the high side and you get the "can you hold it for me, I"m interested but can you send more pictures, I don"t get paid until Friday etc." type folks.
Remember, you got to list for free so honestly what is there to complain about?

I put an ad for a classic car on CL,guy kept emailing me wanted to send me a cashiers check for more than I was asking. I was to pay the transport driver when he picked up the car, and keep the rest for myself.dead giveaway was he didn't want to know anything about the car.he finally gave me a phone no.and when I tried to call, nobody ever answered. Phone number was in new York city. When you find out the checks no good, theyre long gone with your car! They will try anything!

You are right,It does get a lot of exposure for free.I sold one item a week before on there and had five calls about it all from truly interested buyers and no texts or scammers at all.I think if I do list something from now on I will say cash only,no holding, and calls only like some of you have said and maybe it will weed out some of the scammers.

I agree also, yes it has gotten bad. The USA is now like the rest if the world. Steal anything that's not nailed down and if it's nailed down take what it's nailed to also. Never make a honest buck if you can make a buck without working.
There are honest people out there but they are outnumbered by the trash now.
If I sell anything it's cash only, first come first serve.

Scammers from another planet, ignore them. Don't give up on CL, heck the robo-calls I get on the landline, and lately on the cellphone are much worse. I sold an AC on craigslist in less than 4 hours last year, to a real farmer with real $100 bills..

There have always been crooks around looking to separate people from their $$$$.Many of the terms we use today like "Snake Oil Salesman" come from many years ago.

Listed a JD 3 pt. for a 720-730 on CL. Sold it the first day. I had 2 others so I left the ad up. Sold the other 2 the same day. All brought cash as per instructions. Son had a batwing mower listed the same day. He sold it within the week. The guy never even dealt on it. Just looked at it and said he would take it. Works here.

I dont think it matters too much where you are from, here in Scotland its the same. As others have said there are many nice and honest people around just like ourselves unfortunately there is a minority who just cannot be trusted. I also think there are some groups of people who spend their lifes work trying to scam the rest of us, very sad and frustrating.
As some of you may know I have visited the US for a number of years now and have more than often been very encouraged by the people and the purchases I have made.
Lets just hope the good people continue to outnumber the scammers.

The crooks have been around for ever , if they had nt Matt Dillon would not of had anything to do . Running into the bank with your six gun pulled is old hat . Now with the click of the mouse they make your money there money !!

I really don't believe the trash outnumbers the honest. It is just that the trash gets all the attention and headlines.

As already mentioned, put phone number and block email. Eliminates a big hassle right there. Then, as mentioned, bluntly, clearly, and strongly state this is a CASH sale only. I have sold items from $20 to $5,000 and pictures of dead Presidents and one famous inventor are the only means of payment accepted in all situations. I did sell one tractor for $12,500 and the buyer paid for the item with a certified check and didn't pick up the tractor until MY bank had ok'd the funds with the institution who authorized the certified check and told me all was well. Then I called the buyer and he came and picked up the tractor. All went very well.

I have bought and sold several times and only once had a problem. I listed an item on CL a few years back, cash only. Deal was made after a few calls and e-mail pictures sent. Price agreed on was $10,500. Buyer said no problem on cash as that is the way he likes to do business. On a nervous stomach, I had him meet me at a bank. That is where he got nervous and had to get on the road home soon. When the cash was checked at the bank, he got to visit the local police station. Counterfeit bills did not fly well.

I had a generator listed once and got a few calls and no shows. One guy asked why so cheap ? I guess I didn't think it was worth alot as it was very old and not that large of capacity. He got me thinking ? So I relisted it later on for more money and had it gone really fast. So you never know on prices ?

I use craigslist with minimal problems the number 1 rule as others have said is keep your email hidden and use a phone number only, I also specify no texts will be answered.

I just sold a pickup yesterday after being listed for 1 day, specified cash only father and son looked at it Sunday evening and brought the cash back yesterday.

It hasn't "gotten" anything. It always has been "this bad!"

Technology has just brought us closer together and taken away our choice with regards to having to deal with "riff raff." Back in the good ol' days you were exposed to a limited number of people and a limited number of outside influences. You had no idea what went on outside your little sphere of influence, and for all you knew the world was bright and wonderful and everyone was good-hearted and honest.

If you're going to let one scam attempt that you were smart enough to recognize and avoid ruin it for you, I don't know what to say.

We have the same number of scumbags per capita as always. Maybe less actually if crime statistics mean anything.

Ebay is just as bad. Listed one item for $400 minimum and got tone of requests to sell cheaper, outside of Ebay, and asking questions that didn't even make sense and so on. Iv'e sold my last item on Ebay. Cost was way too high. Sold one item on Craigslist last year and had same problems.but at least they both finally sold.

I have sold stuff on Craig's list and bought a bunch on there with out to much problems . Deal local , never go alone , and deal in CIF ( that is Cash in Fist) . Just bought a tenioning jig that was brand new for fifty bucks because the guy said it would not work( because he did not READ the book on how to set it up , works just great on my saw. And last week i picked up a Snap On Soluis scan tool for 800 bucks under what they sell for on E/Bay and a grand under what you would pay on a Snap on tool wagon. But i never did get the shaper i was tryen to buy as the seller was never around to go pick it up and that was fine by me as he must not have wanted the money if he could not spare a half hour .

We buy and sell a few items on craigslist, have had good luck in general. I always put phone calls only, and don't do anything fancy to my phone no. I didn't know you can block email, will have to try it. Best story is two years ago I sold a JD M. A guy called and talked to me about it and said I want it, sight unseen! He said I will send a check and you wait until the check clears and then deliver it, as I agreed to. He had a big smile on his face when he saw it and I backed it off the trailer, and we were both satisfied with the deal. I think we both sounded very honest on the phone, and I always tell people satisfaction guaranteed!

I get texts like that most everytime i place an ad on Craigs. I find that if I DO NOT REPLY they leave me alone. I do a web search on any number that comes up. You'd be surprised. These guys do this for a living. It IS their work.

I remember when there was a nice little paper called "The Want Ad Press" . You could buy or sell anything you wanted . If you blew a motor. There was five in The Want Ad Press. If you needed some sports equipment just call up an ad in the Want Ad Press and go pick it up. Of course Chevelles were like 700 bucks as were Mustangs. A section for all types of items. I sure miss that little publication.

Sadly enough I get hit with these scams daily for the few things I have on CL, a couple of months ago I was trying to sell my paddle boat, it was posted for two months, and I received over 30 spams, all the same. I can't stand it..... Bryce

I list my phone number only and state in capitals that will not respond to e-mails. Have had no problems and have sold a lot on there that would have cost a fortune to reach those people throught paper classifieds. Scammers don't want to talk on the phone. Get rid of texting and e-mail in response to these ads. Give them directions as to what you will and will not answer. They can read just fine. They will NOT talk to you on the phone! Honest people WILL!

I don't place a lot of confidence in caller ID any more. These con artists have phone number spoofers so they can transmit any phone number they choose when they call you.
