can i run 15 w 40 deisel engine oil in a gas powered car.my old beater car has over 200,ooo mile. tractor suply has castrol 15w40 oil on sale for $12 a gallon ,thinking about stocking up

I started running 15W40 in my "88 chevy 2500 beater truck once it started having oil pressure issues and I didn"t want to spend any money fixing it. That was two years ago. Still running fine, but then I don"t put a lot of miles on it.

What motor are we talking about?
Some little 4 cylinders are meant to have 5W-20 in them.
I've seen those engines, brand new, knock and rattle after
putting 10W-30 in them. Went away with the right weight oil.

If you read the manufacturer's info on Delo or Rotella 15w-40 you'll find that it's intended for mixed fleet usage. The only problem is that the higher levels of ZDDP could poison the catalytic converter. Less of a problem with the newer CJ-4 spec as opposed to the older CI-4.

Please elaborate on "beater car". If we are talking about a 1980's cavalier or escort, sure. If we're talking 2000's focus or Pontiac, absolutely not. Older model year engines can take heavier oil as they wear out due too loose tolerances. Newer model year engines, reguardless of mileage cannot as the tolerances are much tighter along with all the hydraulic driven parts like cam tensioners and such.

Is this the oil we are talking about???

If so here is the applicable motors
Castrol GTX Diesel is applicable for gasoline and diesel light trucks and passenger cars where API CJ-4, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4, CF SL or SL SJ engine oil are recommended

CJ-4, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4, all have to do with diesel motors and covers just about any diesel.

SL and SJ is for 2004 and older gas engine cars.
So how old is your car????
If your car requires SM SN or GF1 to GF5 than this oil will not work.

15W40 should only be used in temps above 32 F.

SHHHH, Casey! Wouldn"t want some of my old "beaters" to hear you and think there is a grain of truth to what you just typed, and get "sick" on their diet of "diesel oil"! WOW, for IGNORANCE!

i have to laugh every time i hear this about oil,..just yesterday autozone had a sale on "diesel" oil,..clerk told me not to use it in gas engine..nothing on my place would still be running if that was the case....

This is a very frequent question on this forum. The probably best selling 15-40 oil is called "all fleet" because it will work well in heavy equipment and trucks as well as light trucks and cars, and meets spec. for all. So 95 % of the guys on this forum do just that. The gov't. has forced the manufactures to spec. lighter oil in newer vehicles in order to meet fleet fuel mileage specs. Many owners will run lighter oil in cooler seasons and heavier in hot weather in order to prolong engine life.

ive been running 15/ 40 in everything for years no problems at all and probably better for my engines than the new thin stuff. that being said i dont drive newer cars or trucks, i wont have 'em,my "new' truck is a 94 and thats to modern, my old trucks are living proof that you dont need all the modern computers that go bad just after the warranty expires,or to spend 70 grand on a truck just to get work done, and for cars, anybody tired of the egg shape yet? what happened to style? lol

Read the label. Most HD oils of the sort show combustion and spark applications in the application statement. The thing that varies is the viscosity and they tell you that on the container. Need suitable viscosity for the application.

But in years past, I ran Rot T 15-40 in everything. Now I have some newer equipment with tighter tolerances and it requires a light oil which I have been using and have had no problems to my surprise, having been a heavy oil guy all my life. I mean, My '07 Dodge Ram Hemi P/U was rated for 5w-20 and said if you didn't use it the 8/4 cylinder drop function wouldn't work.

Times have changed.
