OT- Chevy 2500 needs help!

Hi all,

I"ve got a problem and need help! Got a 2004 Chevy 2500hd that is constantly going into reduced power mode. It only does it when in wet conditions, but not all the time. Today a mist will set it off and tomorrow it will run fine in a downpour. Very sporadic and flat out dangerous. BAD feeling going down the road at 70mph with a load of tractors and suddenly your motor shuts down!! Has anyone had this problem and how did you fix it? Any suggestions????....... At wits end with this thing.

I have had the dealership and private mechanics try to fix it, but no luck yet. Figured I would try here before it is fixed with a can of gas and a match!

Thanks for any help!

I ran into that problem a lot on the medium duty trucks with 8.1L engines. I would get a call that the truck was either low on power or the engine had died. Quite often by the time I reached the truck it would not start and run normally. It took a while to finally find the cause.

The problem was caused by abrasion on some of the wires that control the throttle assembly. Road dust will collect inside the harness loom and vibration caused by the harness resting on the inner fender will wear the wiring insulation until bare copper is exposed. In wet conditions water can cause enough of a short between wires that it will give faulty readings to the PCM. The circuits that are involved carry a maximum of 5 volts so a miner changed in voltage will cause faulty reading between the throttle assembly and the accelerator pedal assembly. It is quite common to see DTCs for either the accelerator pedal are the throttle body assembly.

The repair involves repairing the harness and repositioning the harness so that it no longer was laying on the inner fender.

Are you getting a code set? My '03 Suburban did this two years ago.The problem might be with the throttle actuated motor on the pass. side of the throttle body.

Very slight corrosion called fretting can cause poor contacts at the electrical connector at the throttle body.I unplugged and re-installed the connector about 10 times and applied dialectric grease to the terminals.Hasn't happened since.

My 95 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 loses power, but it never stalls. Could this be the problem with mine also? It seems to be ok for the first 8 to 10 miles and then it will start to lose and then regain power.
Thank you
SDE
