New noise. Clatter sounds like coming from under the center of the valve cover. How should I approach diagnosis without having to tear into it?
Also,
Does anybody have a diagram that shows where all the vacumm lines go on same engine? Have several stubbed off and hanging.
Your help is appreciated.

Just a few bolts, take the valve cover off and look, may have a bent or broke pushrod, rocker stud nut loose, or rocker worn out.

Bruce, does it have oil pressure? I had an 86 6cyl that I had to park for about 6 months, and when I got it back on the road, one day the lifters started rattling and I had no oil pressure. While it was sitting the crud deposits inside the engine had dried out and ultimately found their way into the oil pan thus stopping up the pick up strainer. OK, that's worse case scenario. Could be just a lifter sticking.( That one should have hydraulic lifters), When one has been sitting as long as that one, everything tends to dry out, corrode, or rust, but a little TLC can work wonders. May be as simple as an oil change and a can of Mystery Oil. BTW, check your E-mail.

like others said you need to pull the valve cover and see what is making the noise, those 300's are near bullet proof and are simple to fix, probably a rocker arm or bent push rod , as to vacuum lines if there isnt a decal still on the truck engine compartment somewhere a service manual available at most good auto parts stores will have that, be advised some of those lines were blocked off at the factory it depended on what options the truck originally had as to which ones got used, it may have had some changes made thru the years too
