They say you are never to old to learn. I'm 69 and just learned something. I THINK. Neighbor just installed a new starter in his old 580 case. Said there was oil leaking out of it. Sure enough...I had never run across a wet starter before. Some one give this old farm boy some more learnins. Ha Ha

I had one on my Yamaha 4 wheeler leaking oil a few years ago,but that one wasn't supposed to have oil in it. Must have been a bad seal letting it get in there.

I've maintained a fleet of Clark forklifts that had a wet starter. The engine in these lime-green forklifts was a Waukesha. Seriously, the design was marginal when it was new and eventually the seal would start to leak. Then you always have a starter that is dripping oil out the end of the starter. And you always had to use some RTV on the starter nose cone so that section wouldn't leak.
We always had several starters in inventory and if you want a real hassle, try to return some starters that have sat in inventory for a year because the factory forgot to install the wet seal.

Tks everyone. I forgot to tell you this was a new starter that he bought and just pull in. He has been on the phone, and not a Happy New Farmer. I'm off to town to buy a bigger hat.
