Couple of JD tractors sold for record Highs at Walker IA

There was a sale at Walker Iowa that had two low houred JD 55 series tractors on it. The one was a 1990 JD 4455 2wd with 2393 hrs. and the other one was a 1990 JD 4255 2wd with 2317 hrs.

The JD 4455 brought $73,750 and the JD 4255 brought $65,000 ???

I think that the JD 4455 would have sold for around $45,000 when new and the JD 4255 would have been right at $40,000.

Here is a link to Machinery Pete's video of the sale.

Maybe more to the point than original cost would be, what are the prices of today's equivalents of those tractors?

After the $500 fuel shutoff fiasco I described below, I guess I'd be willing to pay a little premium for a low hour tractor that is pre-electronic.

I haven't read the story you refer to, but I was already thinking the same thing.
Just shows how much demand there is for a good, dependable tractor.

After watching a history of electrical and mechanical (likely due to position sensor malfunctions)On a 5525 and 5225 at a farm where I do a lot of work, I believe the tractors from that era will continue to hold value. Electronics have allowed many features but the durability is not there.

I was greasy and cranky when I got done adjusting the governor on my loader tractor yesterday. Now I feel justified doing it. These old tractors will always be better than the new stuff.

We have a strange 4255 at my work place. It has low hours also. It has a little less than 1500 hours on it. It is a quad range with a 4 post ROPS and 2wd. It was ordered with long axles and duals. Despite the 4 post ROPS it's still a nice tractor. Handles like a dream in comparison to our 7420 MFWD set up for 30" rows.

Wonder what this 4 post ROPS quad range 2wd with 1500 hours would bring at auction? Still has the original tires but the front multirib Firestones are getting pretty rotten. I keep waiting for the tread to fall off of one of them...

Weird. A few years ago, a low hour (less than 3000) 4430 sold for about $20,000 around here. Good sheet metal, always kept in a shed, started on the first try every time.

I remember a JD 8530 that had less than 600 hours on it and the fuel pump went out of it. And thanks to the brakes being "all electronic", it was a giant boat anchor right where it sat for 3 days until the JD people came and fixed her where she was stopped in the field. Couldn't tow her or nothing. I was not impressed.

The four post and quad would make it worth way less money. The quad is easily 10K less around me. The four post is regional. In the south it may not hurt it much.

As-is with bad tires and I bet the paint is sun faded it would bring in the upper 20s to maybe mid 30s in price.

About 4 months ago a buddy of mine bought a 2wd 4455 from a guy about 30 minutes from my house. It was a 93 model quad range tractor with no duals and 2 outlets. He told me he gave $42,000 for when he ordered it from Farmer"s Tractor in North Alabama. He sold the tractor for $40,000 with 7240 hours on it. It looked brand new and still had the original paint.
